Jade Mall was easy to enter with its plethora of entry points, some of which were dangerous due to shattered glass, collapsed ceiling sections, and unstable supports. A well-known fact about the once popular shopping district was that brigades of people entered to steal the unguarded clothing held within alongside various other necessities for the post-apocalypse. Thus despite the world falling into shambles the Jade Mall seemed to retain its appeal and turned into a place where survivors scavenged for supplies. Nyla was one of those copious survivors who arrived at the mall in hopes of finding a couple of items to assist her and Ines through these terrible times.
The parking lot of the large mall was dotted with a couple of cars, each long forgotten by their owners. The sun shone brightly in the blue sky and the rays of sunlight glinted off the undamaged and cracked windshields alike. A pleasantly warm breeze rustled Nyla's hair as she crouched in the nearby shrubs. They made pathetic cover, especially since the teen was wearing her beloved red hoodie and skinny jeans combo opposed to camouflage. Her ears gently flicked every now and again in search for noise as she remained a vigilant sentry amidst shrubbery. The blonde girl had grown to understand how the world of sound changed due to her mutated ears that amplified the noise. Once the surrounding area seem satisfy her criteria for safe, Nyla stood to her full height.
She jogged across the parking lot and smoothly slipped through the doors of Jade Mall. The interior of the mall always astounding Nyla since she always found that the former shopping complex looked larger from the inside. Cold air hovered in the air which was likely maintained by the shade of the roof and wind. For a mere few moments the fox girl allowed herself to breath, the far distance did not warrant need for a break, but Nyla was a smart girl. Gently, her ears swiveled from side to side in an effort to detect the noise of possible threats. A whistling noise could be heard from the wind outside, but otherwise there seemed to be little noise. Slowly, Nyla's tail swayed while her yellow eyes did a thorough overlook of the mall to confirm the stillness.
When the female teen began walking, she heard her shoes clicked against the mostly cracked floor tiles. Her pale hands retreated to the warmth of her pocket, her left clasping around a pocket knife, her only easy-to-hide weapon, and the right crinkling the plastic bags she carried. Unfortunately, a survivor could not always carry the luxury of a good knapsack. The primary aim of her venture was to gather clothing for herself and darling little sister. A one woman clothing brigade in an unforgiving world. Nyla could not promise that Jade Mall was a good location to gather clothes considering she would not doubt for a moment that this place became popular for survivors of all kinds. Good or evil could arrive which meant that the teen desired to make her gathering a quick one.
Ear pricked and eyes on a constant stand, the teen continued walking down the shop-lined halls of the mall. There were copious clothing stores, but Ines was her initial concern which meant clothing for her sister came before anything else. Once Nyla spotted a children's clothing store that did not look picked dry, she hastily made her way over. Racks upon racks of clothing were scattered around the store, some had even fallen over which made hap-hazardous piles that people could slip on. A quick scan assured the blonde girl that there was unlikely to be anybody within the store. She made her way towards the back and figured making her way towards the entrance would be the best course of action. The first round, spinning rack that Nyla located had miscellaneous sizes, thus she began sorting through them. The rack squeaked and with every turn, Nyla's head would dart up and glance around before returning the the task at hand.

| I nes stood up carefully and peeked from her hiding place. Nyla had told her to wait there until she came back, but the young girl was beginning to get restless. Every small noise she heard scared her, making her think that something was out there. It seemed like Nyla had left forever ago and Ines was worried, she hated to think what might happen if her sister never came back. Resisting the urge to cry, she left her hiding spot and headed off to find her sister
She walked across the semi-smooth parking lot, looking back and forth constantly to both keep and eye out for her sister and danger. Her small, stubby legs carried her slowly across the seemingly endless lot. She walked and walked, but never seemed to reach the entrance. Time was strange to an eight year old, five minutes could feel like five hours. She stopped a moment and sighed, her legs were beginning to tire already and she’d only been searching for about ten minutes. She wanted to sit and rest momentarily, but movement in the corner of her eye caught her attention.
Turning towards the source of the movement, Ines called out her sister’s name in the hope that it might be her. There was no response and she called out again, this time yelling as loud as her small lungs would allow. She got a response, but not quite the response she had hoped for. A dog poked it’s head out from under a car and began growling when it spotted her. She backed up slowly before turning to run away, not waiting to see if it was chasing her. Ines ran as fast as her tiny legs would carry her, making it almost to the doors before she tripped and fell. Landing on her hands and knees, she cried out in pain. The young girl turned her head to see the dog quickly covering the distance between them. Panic took over and she jumped to her feet, running up to the broken entrance doors.
Ines searched quickly for an opening before spotting a small hole next to them. She crawled through and looked around. The room before her was huge, making her feel like an ant. She swung around and looked back through the hole. The dog was quite persistent, still making its way across the lot towards her. Ines grabbed the nearest object and placed it in front of the hole. It wasn’t enough, so she wandered the entrance. There was a trash can not too far away and she walked up to it. It was taller than her, but she could push it. She pressed her shoulder into the side and shoved as hard as she could, scooting the trashcan inch by inch towards the hole, producing a shrill squealing noise. There was a small pause as she moved the plant out of the way and then shifted the trashcan directly in front of the hole. It was just big enough to cover the small opening and Ines let out a sigh of relief.
The young girl promptly spun away and began her trek into the mall, jumping into the air when the dog slammed into the trashcan. Luckily, it held and she ran off to find her sister. She needed to find Nyla and fast, but with the sheer size of the mall it seemed hopeless. Ines ran past store after store, peering into each to see if Nyla might be in there. After a few minutes of searching she became tired and slumped against a wall, sliding till her butt hit the floor. She brought her knees up to her chest, scraped and bleeding, and began to cry. The salt from her tears stung the open wounds and her hands burned when she wiped her eyes.

A gentle squeal of protest would sound from the rack whenever the fox-tailed girl would turn it. It was an alarm to Nyla's fine tuned ears and shouted her current location which meant it was detriment. Thus, instead of turning the rack itself, Nyla walked around the circular rack and shuffled through the various articles of clothing. Her plan was satisfactory since it eliminated the chance of the noisy squeaks getting her discovered, which made her surrounding checks less frequent. Draped over the blonde's right arm were pieces that she had already chosen, all of which she personally thought were adorable for Ines. The post-apocalypse was maybe here, but that did not mean the teen could not at least attempt to make cute outfits for herself and her sister!
The fox-ears on the teen's head were straight up and attentively searching for any sounds of concerns. First, they pricked to the noise of her name being called by what sounded like her sister. Nyla straightened and turned her head to glance over her right shoulder and listened for a few moments longer. She still was not completely adjusted to the amplified sound detection her fox-like ears equipped her with. Once she confirmed it was Ines, Nyla began to walk towards the entrance of the store, her sister had likely gotten frightened or worried. That was when her ears managed to hear the cry of pain her sister made and the obvious sounds of a struggle; the wind had carried it towards Nyla. Suddenly, her heart beat elevated and she dropped the clothing, something was clearly wrong. A high-pitched squeal and a loud thud only worried the teenager more as she entered the hallway and her ears swiveled towards the noise.
Worry clouded Nyla's thoughts as she went into a dead sprint down the hallway, the sounds of her feet hitting the tiles echoing around the mall. Being heard was not important, especially when her sister could very possibly be in trouble. The teen's ears kept a vigilant search for noise that could aid her find Ines or locate any trouble that could come her way. She was scared and concerned that perhaps she lost the little girl that was her little sunshine. Protecting Ines was a full-time occupation with overtime hours that paid with high rewards of joy. A steely determination entered Nyla, she was going to find her sister and protect her from whatever horror was frightening her now or in the future! The task was illogical and impossible, but when it came to Ines, the illogical and impossible were merely tasks that would take some effort.
That was when her well-tuned ears detected the sounds of sobs, that had to be Ines unless somebody else lost an eight year old in Jade Mall. Despite the slight weariness claiming the teen, she pushed harder in an attempt to run to her sister faster. Nyla's breath was labored, but years of sports and hard work kept her body strong, thus she endured. The mutated teenager rounded the corner and finally her yellow eyes saw her precious sister crying and her scrapped up hands and knees. A shred of guilt teared into Nyla, she should have never left her dear sunshine alone, or at least she should have left her at base. The teen slowed her steps as she approached Ines, her breaths deep as her lungs reached for oxygen.
For a few moments, Nyla just breathed and allowed her body some rest as she closed the distance between her and Ines. Her sister was scrapped up, but thankfully the injuries were not any worst. Scraps were something the blonde teen had learned to treat ages ago. Once Nyla was close enough, she crouched down and put a hand on Ines' shoulder.
"Shhhh... shhhh. It's okay, sis. I'm here now, Nyla crooned. A reassuring smile was on the teen's lips as she tried to keep from turning into an over-protective mother hen. "Are you alright? 'Cause I promise big sister Nyla can patch ya up in no time and make you feel better." Nyla's voice remained quiet and reassuring as she tried to calm her little sister. "Sorry I left ya there, that was totally uncool of me. I thought you'd be alright, but I'm guessin' you got scared? No worries, I can't blame ya."
As she spoke, Nyla's eyes checked over her sister's injuries numerous times to make certain they did not require immediate medical attention. Her ears kept their vigilant lookout for noise; her sister was injured and there was no remote possibility that Nyla was going to drop her guard now of all times.

| The sound of footsteps rapidly approaching was frightening to say the least. Ines pulled her legs in tight, attempting to make herself as small as possible in the hopes that she would suddenly develop the ability to disappear. She could hear laboured breathing as the footsteps drew ever nearer. The footsteps closed in and suddenly a hand was set gently on her shoulder. Looking up through tear-filled eyes, Ines saw the blurry outline of her older sister crouching in front of her. She wrapped her arms around Nyla, holding tightly to the older girl as if she might disappear at any moment. “Ny Ny? I missed you, I got scared when you didn’t come back and I tried to look for you. The big dog chased me though and I fell trying to run away.” Ines sobbed into her sister’s shirt, clinging to Nyla like a lifeline. She feared if she loosened her grip even the slightest bit Nyla would fly away and never come back. To say she had abandonment issues would be an understatement. She didn’t blame her sister for leaving her behind. Ines was just a child and would most likely get in the way while scavenging and it would definitely be a hassle for Nyla to defend herself, but it would be even harder for the teenager to defend both of them. Her tail swished slowly behind her, drooping slightly. Some days Ines hated her tail, it gave away her emotion and made her feel like a freak. “I’m sorry you had to come find me. I shoulda stayed where I was, I know that you gotta get stuff for us to live. I’ll be okay now, I can even help you if you want.” She looked up at her sister, wiping tears from her eyes. Ines didn’t want to worry her sister, she often felt like a burden and tried her best to help when she could. Using her sleeves, Ines wiped the remaining tears from her face and smiled at her big sister. Now that she was here, she might as well help her sister look for whatever they had come to get. “Ny, I wanna help you. It would go twice as fast with the both of us.” Ines proudly held up two fingers and bounced up and down on her heels. She brushed her hair back with her hands and took a couple of shaky breaths.

Seeing her sister curl into a tighter ball made Nyla feel absolutely terrible for leaving Ines all by herself. Although it was practically impossible, the blonde girl felt that she should have predicted this unfortunate outcome. The tears only confirmed that Nyla had indeed made a mistake leaving the eight-year-old in the location she thought as safe. Obviously one of the safest location would be right by her side where Nyla could keep watch over her. As soon as Ines wrapped her arms around her, Nyla gave her sister a tight hug. The fox-eared girl absolutely hated making her precious little sister upset. As she listened to what happened, Nyla tightened the grip around her sister. " Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry, Ines. I should have guessed and came back as soon as I thought it was safe." She kept her soft tones as she spoke to her upset little sister. When Ines broke into sobs, Nyla gently rubbed her back. " Shhh, shhh. It's alright, Ines. I will always be here for you and as long as I'm here, nothin's going to hurt ya," Nyla soothed. The teen allowed her little sister to cry into her sweater as she patiently waited for her sister to calm down. Without much hesitation, Nyla decided to try the one thing that calmed her sister, singing. Her mind sifted through numerous lullabies until she landed on a more soothing one. With that, Nyla began to sing Song of the Sea in a gentle voice, her pitches perfect. The fox-eared girl had always enjoyed the song's gentle melody and figured it would perhaps have a calming effect. As she sang, Nyla began to analyze her sister further and noticed the drooping of her tail. When Ines apologized, Nyla flashed her a reassuring grin. " You don't need to apologize my sweet, little Miel. You know I would go to the ends of the universe and back for you if I had to," Nyla stated. She had switched out the swear for something more suitable; it was maybe the apocalypse, but she could at least try to avoid the use of vulgar language around her dear sister! Nyla watched as Ines wiped away the tears from her face, using her sleeve to clean up the last few remnants from her crying. Afterwards, her little sister smiled up at her and Nyla responded with a gentler one. She kept her hands on her sister's shoulders for a few moments before rising to her full height. When her sister bounced up with two fingers held up and insisted on helping, the teen gave a small laugh. " Of course you can. I don't wanna leave you out there again," Nyla responded. " However, the real question is do you want a piggyback ride there or do you want to walk?" Nyla asked. Generally, the fox-eared girl was willing to do anything to make her sister safe and happy, especially in the times of the post-apocalypse. Which meant piggyback rides had to offered every now and again, not that it was necessarily a hindrance to Nyla. Years of playing sports and working hard had kept her body rather strong after all. | Off to where birds sing, and imagination dwells.

Ines smiled and hummed along as her sister sang. Her breathing slowed to a normal pace and she felt herself becoming calmer by the second. It concerned her a bit when her sister spoke and she vowed to be more careful. When Nyla said she’d go to the ends of the universe for her, she knew the fox girl meant it. Ines loved her sister dearly and she knew it would take work, but swore that she would become stronger. “I can walk, I’m a big girl!”
She gave Nyla her biggest brightest smile and grabbed her hand, pulling her back the direction the young woman had come from. Eager to help, she moved as fast as her little legs would carry her and counted on her sister to stop them when they’d arrived at their destination.
“What are we here to get Ny? I promise I can help, I’ll be very, very helpful. So helpful that you’ll hardly have to do ANY work. I’ll do it all by myself cause I’m a big kid now!”
Ines rambled on excitedly as they walked, rapidly changing subjects and stopping every time something caught her eye. Up ahead, Ines saw a clothing store and rushed in running about between the shelves and clothing racks looking at everything eagerly. Soon, a dress caught her eye and she stopped to stare. It was a pastel pink with off-shoulder sleeves and floral-like designs around the collar and sleeves. Ines spun around to face her sister with a pleading look in her eyes.
“Can I have it? Please please, please? I promise I’ll be real good, and I won’t get it dirty.”

As her sister grew calmer, a gentle smile began to grace the lips of the blonde girl. Her sister humming along and smiling was an excellent sign of a growing calmness awakening within the child. Naturally, Nyla hated seeing her precious sister upset. Childhood could be a fragile thing with the death of their parents, the fox-eared teen worked tirelessly to keep her younger sister's life happy. Even if in the midst of the post-apocalypse it was a goal Nyla was determined to accomplish. Ines was her light in darkness, an innocence caught within this horrible reality that needed her protection. When it became time to move, Nyla giggled a little at her sister's comment about walking.
"Of course you are," Nyla said, letting Ines lead the way.
They returned down the hallway that long-legged blonde had been sprinting her way down only a few moments prior. Whilst they walked, Nyla's ears remained pricked and searched for any threatening sounds. Keeping up with her little sister was an easy task, especially since the young woman had plenty of height over her little sister. When she heard Ines's voice, Nyla glanced down at her sister who asked what they were searching for. Her little sister's insistence on helping Nyla to the point where she would have to do little work a finger made the teen smile. She did always adore how kind her sister was since it made the young woman feel like a good parent.
"Mostly clothing, my little Miel. However, we should really take anything that can help us out in the long run. Better to gather supplies before anyone else snatches them from us. That would not be cool and if we want to be extra ready we need whatever we require," Nyla explained.
The young woman listened as her younger sister rambled on excitedly, her ears catching each word. Every so often she nodded or threw in a couple of words, but overall let her sister do most of the speaking. When Ines spotted the store, Nyla followed her in and gazed at the various articles of clothing. She whisked through some while her sister searched, her ears pricked to listen for signs of danger. When she spared a glance at her sister, she discovered her staring at a pastel pink dress with some floral patterns. It would definitely look absolutely adorable on her sister. She watched as the little girl spun to face her with pleading eyes and begged for the dress.
Nyla's yellow eyes returned to the dress, examining it. It was not the most useful wear for the apocalypse, but her vows to keep Ines happy rung in her mind. She thought of a moment longer, the dress was not something heavy and could be easily carried. Once her decision was made, Nyla smiled and looked down at her little sister.
"Sure, might as well. It's not too heavy and we could probably find a bag to carry it back in." Nyla stated, warranting her sister to the dress.
She saw no harm in indulging her sister with something that was very easy to take. It was something small that could make Ines happy, thus Nyla considered it an excellent idea.
