Zephyr faced the opposite direction Nyla did, doing this left few visual blind spots, and zero audible blind spots. when the smell of blood and steel came to him, he pinpointed first the direction of the scent, then sound of the heartbeat. Rapid, unsteady, this one was afraid, but still intent on attacking.
Then the other scent hit him. The smelled of cooked meat. But not the meat of an animal.
"Cannibals. There are people, so afraid of ingesting Maras from animals, they have started hunting and killing humans. I hadnt heard of any around here but...We have to kill them. Maras in humans, even if it doesnt effect them, but ingesting the flesh of humans causes neurological damage. Ever heard of the Wendigo? A being, once human, now lost to madness, devouring his brothers and sisters. Its a side effect of cannibalism in humans."
He let his arrow fly, there was no scream this time, just a dull thunk as the arrow hit something other than flesh. the cannibal human came charging out towards him, eyes bloodshot and wild looking. There was no way Zeph could draw another arrow, but then...it was a blur of brown, and his bow slid across the attackers throat, the thin sharpened lengths of glass embedded into the bow shaft slicing the skin and releasing a gout of red, steaming blood.
"Four more! One behind, Two ahead! The fourth is to the left. Dont let them get into a blind spot!"

There was a mild sense of calm while Nyla gripped the hunting knife, her eyes attentive to the noise around her. Rapid heartbeats, and she presumed that included her own as she tried to pump herself up for any possible combat. Suggesting a visit to the marsh and insisting on going was now regretted by the blonde girl due the fact that she had no training. Nyla calmed herself with a couple of breaths, she needed to learn if she was going to protect her little sister. With a new air of confidence entering her mind, Nyla prepared herself with some mini mental pep-talks.
She grimaced, the concept of cannibalism was always a rather disgusting one due to the graphics in some of the more violent games she had played. When Zephyr mentioned Wendigo, Nyla nodded fiercely, she had met them in video games and had done some private research considering they were a gruesome and interesting topic.
"Yeah, researched the topic once, Nyla explained. Soon she realized that the fact of combat experience still remained unspoken, but before she could utter a word, Zephyr loosed an arrow; well it was definitely too late to mention it.
The graphic display she witnessed was horrendous, the splash of blood that streamed from the attacker's throat. Everything seemed slow for a moment as her eyes even noticed how the man's clouded over. The disgusting scent of blood filled the air, which was unfamiliar to the battle newbie. Yet, Nyla kept quiet since she was always head nurse for Ines' injuries over the three years and had even helped a couple of co-workers with cuts. Naturally, this was completely different, but she merely annoyed the horrifying visuals and prepared to fight. Her tail remained close to her legs, the last thing she wanted was for an attacker to get a grip on it.
"Okay!" Nyla responded to Zephyr's words.
The blonde girl decided to avoid the pair ahead; she was new to fighting and challenging a team alone seemed like an accident waiting to happen. Although clueless to the fundamentals of a brawl, Nyla figured that the one behind would probably be best to remove from the situation. Years of video games taught her that sneak attacks from behind were a terrible and sometimes rage quit inducing thing. The teen also thought that basing all her moves off of concepts presented in video games was probably not the greatest idea, but it was the only one she had. Being smaller than the large male she was paired against, Nyla refused to rush him, that was likely to leave her in hot water due to her severe lack of brute strength. Her eyes zeroed in while her ears listened for any clever attackers coming her way. The brute did rush her, but he did not bear a weapon which made his meaty fists his primary tool for his assault.
He barreled towards her, but before he could actually run her over, Nyla dodged right and swiped out with the hunting knife. The blade narrowly hit and left a meager cut on the man's beefy forearm. That was when the teen found her solace, the brute's reaction times were slow and she had long learned to react quickly. Before he turned to face her, she managed to get another swipe in, this one a little deeper. Then there was the side thought, this would probably just waste her energy. Thus, Nyla dodged the man's hits over and over, waiting for an opportunity to do some meaningful damage. The chance came when she was backed up against a rotting tree and manged to slip away from an aggravated punch that went straight through the tree. The brute's fist got stuck and since the teen was close by, she managed to slide the hunting knife into his throat with one smooth movement.
She felt a tad tired, but adrenaline was definitely a marvelous thing and kept her energized. Nyla grimaced as she slid the blade out, she had never taken a life before and she genuinely felt bad despite the fact the man had attempted to murder her. Alas, there was no time to mourn over the idea, there was still a fight going on. Thus, the teen left the lifeless corpse and turned back to see what she may be up against next.

Zephyr Heard her go for the one behind, and he turned to the front, an arrow drawn, he sent one flying, and it thunked into the thigh of the larger of the two to the front, but while he was distracted the one to the left charged. Zephyr was no stranger to fighting for his life, he tossed his bow high in the air, and, as instinct dictated, the charging cannibal diverted his gaze to follow the movement. Allowing the young man to take an arrow, and manually lodge it in the man's throat, ripping the flesh, rather than slicing it.
He Caught his bow, but didnt have time to draw an arrow before the last man was on him, grappling him and dragging him to the ground. Zephyr found himself pinned, but not completely. Using his one free arm he gripped the man's face and plunged his thumb into his eye, bursting the organ and making the attacker scrabble backwards screaming.
Never one to allow prolonged suffering, the gifted young man took his boot knife and slit the throat of the injured man, killing him swiftly. He then walked over and killed the man he had shot in the leg.
"Ember. Burn the bodies."
He began wiping the blood of his blade, and bending down, washed his face and hands in the mucky water on the ground. He was shaking, both fro m the adrenaline and from the horrible rising nausea of having killed.
He looked at Nyla.
"It never gets easier...You can keep that knife. And i'll teach you to use it. Teach you to fight properly."

Originally, Nyla thought she was doing a decent job, until she turned around and discovered that Zephyr had already disposed of the remaining opponents. The gruesome scene was enough to cause the teenager's mouth to gape as her mind cluttered with thoughts. On the battlefield, Zephyr was ten times better at fighting than her and that was blatantly obvious. She felt herself shake a little, finding herself glad that she had been offered peace instead of a fight. Her dinky pocket knife likely would have lost the battle instantly if she had chosen hostility over passiveness.
As the adrenaline she felt drained from her bother, Nyla felt herself shaking more, she had just killed somebody. It was certainly self-defense, but it did not change what had happened. Her yellow eyes finally looked towards her pale hands, finding streaks of blood painted across her right alongside the sleeve of her purple windbreaker. There was the feeling of butterflies in her stomach and for a few moments her breath was shaky, but the blonde knew that composing herself was important. Nyla began to focus on breathing, slowing it in hopes that her nerves would gradually calm her. When she heard Zephyr speak to her, the teen glanced back up at him and listened. She did not dare rebuke against any of the words, even when her fighting was somewhat referred to as improper since it was likely true. Clearly, Zephyr knew his way around a brawl better than she did.
"I know, I know and I would appreciate that," Nyla responded. Her voice still shook a tad and leaned towards the quiet side; she still had not recovered from what had just happened. "And thank-you, I don't think my pocket knife would hold up in a fight. For a moment she hesitated as she felt the need to apologize for not mentioning her lack of battle experience. "I'm sorry for not mentionin' that I've never fought before. I honestly meant to, but I must've had a dumb moment and didn't."
Nyla merely stood quietly, her mind racing as it recalled the events that occurred a few moments ago. There was still a pang of guilt over killing, but she knew better than to dwell on the topic. She gave a silent apology to her victim, even though she was forced to commit the act, she felt it was necessary. Then she remembered the plant, Zephyr still needed his hogswart.
"We should probably find that plant now. If there is more of them or other malicious sorts they may have heard that ruckus and be on their way." It was a suggestion since it seemed that Zephyr had some other improved sense considering he had noticed the man in the bush.

Zephyr looked at her.
"Its safe, nearest thing to us is a bear, and hes not interested. One of the odd ones who isn't completely maddened. Take a bit to breath, I know how it is after a fight. If you need to puke, just do it in the bushes. There's no Hogweed, at least none that's ripe enough to harvest, it has a very noticeable scent, and the stuff here isnt grown enough to harvest. In about two weeks the first of it will be ready."
He went over to a log and sat down, patting the spot next to him. He remembered his first fight, his first human kill, and he knew he had wanted someone to comfort him back then.
"I can teach you to fight, but i cant teach you to like killing, or even find it easier, no one can. The strong ones, they can shut down their feelings after a while, but then they become heartless. I think you'd be a good Archer, you've got the arms for it, with a bit of strength training that is."

Being informed about the safety of the area did little to soothe Nyla's nerves. The teen nodded to Zephyr's advice and attempted to keep her breathing regular. There was still the slightest quiver to her breaths, but gradually they began to smooth. Her stomach felt surprisingly stable, although she had never killed she had seen and smelt the dead. Naturally during the post-apocalypse one will find places littered with corpses and in this case they could be a mutated animal or a dead human. Upon the mention of the hogsweed not being ripe, Nyla figured it was best for them to leave. Scavengers may come around looking for an easy meal to consume.
Before the blonde uttered a word, Zephyr had gone and sat down, offering her a spot. For a moment there was hesitation, but the after thought still remained that he knew what was around them with some sort of keen sense. She made her way over slowly, the ground squishing below her feet as she closed the distance between her and the log then sat down beside him. With attentive ears, Nyla listened to him, he was more of an expert in fighting than her.
"Liking killing is how a monster is mad and ending a life I would imagine never gets easy," Nyla uttered quiet. She did not like the idea of killing becoming easier or likable, the entire concept of that seemed like the makings of a monster. "Okay, I will have to take your word on that. Never even considered taking archery back in high school, but maybe I should've. Would have made protecting Ines easier."
Gradually, her mind began to calm as she began relaxing herself. The thick fog had seemed to clear, thus Nyla's gaze glanced towards the sun. It was getting towards the later hours of morning, but she still had time to spare since she hopes her little sister would not wander off. She watched as a few clouds lazily drifted through the blue sky.
"Should we still get out of here? Never know when a scavenger may come 'round looking for an easy meal. Nyla suggested, mostly because she wanted to avoid getting into another brawl today if she could.

Zephyr looked at her, he almost smiled, despite their morbid topic.
"My mom, before she died, she used to say 'The only Monsters are the ones who were once human.' It always stuck with me, and when i was in the Foster system, well it became really painfully obvious. I was off living in the woods before Madman. Ran away when i was fifteen, never really looked back. Then Madman happened, and suddenly, the animals liked me, and only me, i never got hot anymore, and i could change my body, in part, or in full, to be like that of any animal i had touched."
He shrugged off his heavy coat, and pulled it over Nyla's shoulders. He rubbed his neck a bit and quirked a half grin.
"We can head out if you like, but even if an animal did come around, once i touch it, it will be as a tame as any domestic dog, from before Madman. But, yeah, if you got a little sister to care for, we should head back, how are you on food? I could snag us a deer or something? there are several nearby, and i know how to cut, dry and smoke meat for preservation."
Ember glared at him. Here he was getting all flustered...Humans never made sense...

Although the disturbing scene still remained, Nyla soon found that the shaking had dissipated. The teen lived by a single law, which was to remain strong for the sake of her little sister. When her parents had died, she refused to fall into any sort of despair, thus she gave the man she killed a final mental apology then kept her thoughts on protecting Ines. Once again she glanced at her filthy hands, she would have to clean up before she headed home to see her little sister. The nail polish she wore was now chipped, although it was insignificant it was still a minor defeat since she had spent some good time yesterday on them, however, she shook it off pretty quick. Once Zephyr began to speak, Nyla's attention returned to her companion.
The notion about his mother made her think of her parents. "Must have been hard losing her. I lost my parents when I was 16, so I know it can be pretty terrible. That's kind of why I'm here now, had to move from Newfoundland all the way to here with Ines to live with relatives. Then they turned out to be some lazy human beings so I practically had to raise her from then on. It wasn't too fun a time, but Ines was a good sort." Nyla started, but stopped. She had just rambled about some depressing topic, that probably was a bad thing to do. Probably made the mood a little dreary. "Whoops, I rambled a little. My bad."
Usually she talked about her parents and their death very little since it was a sad topic. If somebody asked, she would naturally answer without any lies, but otherwise it was a topic kept silent. Yet, while she sat on the log talking about it the concept it was not nearly had depressing to her; it was actually kind of nice being able to talk about it. When she felt the heavy jacket get placed on her shoulders, she flashed Zephyr a quick smile.
"Thanks." Afterwards, she listened again. "Yeah, I better get back to Ines soon. She is my little sunshine and I oughta be the rad big sister I am and get back to her. Also, that would be awesome. Maybe you can teach me some stuff too since most of my knowledge comes from a couple of survival guides, but hands on experience is the best. There were cheerful notes to her voice, she was starting to feel better. "Oh, and if you need your jacket back just say so, my windbreaker does a pretty bang up job of keeping me warm," Nyla added.

Zephyr smiled.
"Yeah my last foster home was...well, they only fostered for the state checks. I walked and hitchhiked my way from Boston to Toronto, then made my way...well somewhere around here i think, not actually sure, there was a town within a two day walk, but really nothing much else."
He shrugged his shoulders when she mentioned his jacket.
"Cold doesn't bother me much, since i can make the air cold enough to freeze a mans lungs dead in his chest. Its odd, but i don't really feel the cold like others do anymore. Besides, you need to keep warm, one thing no really expects after a fight with the sudden cold you feel. The Adrenaline makes you sweat, and heats your body, the sudden drop in skin temp plus the sweat, makes you feel cold. In the winter, it can kill you. Its better to be cold and dry in the winter than cold and wet, or even warm and wet, since the moisture sucks the heat out of your body."
He smiled again.
"But hey, you seem pretty strong, you've lived this long with your sister, with no help from outsiders. Means you have smarts. Come on, we head out now, and I'll snag one of those rabbits instead, eaiser to clean, and i use it to show you how to make leather for binding a bow."

Everything was soon improving from the previous atrocities as smiles were flashed and the mood seemed to turn for the better. Nyla's tail curled up to sit beside her, its fur marked with small traces of mud. The teen made a mental note that her tail would also require some washing. Her yellow eyes continued a quick analysis of the dirt she had gained as a result of the battle. Her shoes were caked in it, some reaching up to lick her ankles and pant legs, then there was the blood on her hands to deal with. Over all, she was mildly impressed by how little mud marked her, cleaning up would take only a short amount of time it seemed. Her gaze returned to Zephyr, who she found smiling which turned contagious as the corners of her lips tugged up into a grin.
"Wow, sounds like you have traveled a lot. Man, wish I could've traveled around a little more. There would be so many things to see and draw, I could imagine it would be spectacular." There were tones of amazement to her voice since the concept of traveling seemed absolutely marvelous.
The time spent with Zephyr was by far pleasant since most of the friends made in Nootau itself consisted of annoying gossip girls and a very limited amount of nerdy folk. A majority of the people who defined as good friends to Nyla were people she could only communicate to via the Internet. With how things were going, her current determination was to become Zephyr's friend; she needed somebody to talk to around her age! However, as she sat beside him she could not help, but think he did seem pretty cute. The blonde blushed slightly and giggle quietly to herself, coming up with such a notion was a tad embarrassing.
"My, you are truly a lucky one Zephyr," she responded. "Being completely indifferent to temperature must be pretty rad, I can easily say I'm thoroughly jealous." Upon hearing what he said next, the teenager found her smile broadening. "Yeah, guess you can say that, eh? It's a lot of work, but it will always be worth it." Nyla began. Putting her sister first was a common since Ines was considered her little sunshine. When Zephyr mentioned it was time to move, the blonde stood up from the log and felt the ground squish beneath her weight. "Alrighty, lead the way. Your the master of this stuff," she said cheerfully.

He chuckled.
"Well it can be a pain, i dont really feel the cold, but it still affects me. Any way, you sure you want me to try and track down your place? I could find it pretty easy, freaks some people out."
He tapped his nose and twitched on of the black ears with a grin.
"I can make my nose as sharp as a wolf's, makes tracking really easy. There's some warmish water in the general direction we need to head, if you like we could stop there to wash up a bit?"
He looked away rather sheepishly, since his right arm was coated with blood from the shoulder to the wrist. He always wore his jacket with his arms out of the sleeves, since he mostly used it to hide his bright white salvaged shirt, and because of this, the jacket itself was almost devoid of blood, but for a few droplets.
"You know, with your nails, you could use some oxidized iron ore from the soil, mix it with some salvaged lacquer, the clear stuff is so easy to find, and it would make an interesting red shade."
He remembered seeing a beauty shop in a shelled out town a day or two's hard run south, maybe he could run there for some real nail polish? Maybe some shampoo too, although he might have to bear the risk of insulting her by getting a dog shampoo for her tail, human shampoos didn't work so well for fur.

At the current moment the world seemed to be filled with smiles and laughter as the tones gradually transformed to soft ones. The prior events were forgotten for the moment, but would likely be the product of some future nightmares for the blonde teen later on. She continued to listen in contentment; her mouth drawn up in a lip-tight smile even while the breeze rustled strands of her short blonde hair into her face.
"Darn, that must be the worst," Nyla said. She giggled at the second one. "If ya want, heck, maybe we can meet up again sometimes and you could teach me some stuff," Nyla replied cheerfully. "It must be pretty rad to be able to track things down. Anyways, yeah, let's head there. I wouldn't want to return hope a filthy mess if I can avoid it." Only a mere few moments afterwards did she realize she had not bothered to ask if he was alright after the fight. In a genuine tone she voiced her inquiry. "Hey, you didn't get hurt, did ya? You got in a lot worst of a scrap than I did."
For the most part, Nyla had been oblivious to the notion that some of the blood that coated Zephyr right arm. There was a pang of guilt over the fact she had not asked that mingled in with worry. She was worries about his well-being, not to the extent her worry for Ines went, but more so than for an average stranger. Upon the mention of her nails, Nyla glanced down and gave a quaint smile at the idea, it would most likely be interesting. Usually she would use the various nail polish to create some designs, her ambidextrous abilities allowing her to decorate with ease.
"It probably would, I never really thought of that. I love art so I usually just paint on a coat and sometimes do designs on it afterwards. I'll probably just clean off the nail polish and start from scratch when I have time." Nyla was not sure what her new design aim would be towards. She would undoubtedly think of something when the time came and the artistic muse hit.

The question about his well being caught him off guard.
"No I'm fine, although my left arm is going to be sore later on, definitely got a bruise there, but I've got some poultices at my little camp, and the Aimon settle has a rat I tamed with saliva that increases healing."
He was able to locate the stream easily enough and almost pulled his t shirt off right away before stopping, shirt halfway up.
"Umm, I'm only washing my upper body...i can go around the corner if you want..."
He was too cursed used to living alone...

When she heard that Zephyr had only received sore limbs alongside a few bruises, Nyla flashed a smile. She was very pleased to hear that her companion had not gained any terrible injuries and that if he did there was something that could heal him. The last thing she wanted was for him to get hurt because of her lack of combat experience; if so she would have felt partially to blame!
"That's good. I would have been really worried if you got hurt." More cheerful tones entered her voice, it seemed to be occurring more frequently.
Quietly, she followed Zephyr towards the stream, her ears picking up the sound of trickling water. The ground seemed to grow more stable as mushy dirt changed to more solid ground. For a few moments, her eyes did the common inspection of surroundings, a habit formed by the survivor to make certain all was well in the area. Once she completed her circuit her eyes returned to the stream to kind an interesting sight. Zephyr's shirt was halfway up, which caused her face to heat up and a mild tint of red to grace her cheeks. She really had not been expecting that. Naturally, she had seen her family members shirtless on hot summer days or during swims, but this was obviously different. She had no plans to do a thorough wash, she mostly just wanted to clean the mud off her feet and the blood on her hands then perhaps deal with some of the dirt in her tail.
"I-it's fine," she paused a moment to gather herself. "I'm just cleaning up a little bit so I'm not too messy when I get home." There was a hint of sheepishness to her voice.
Afterwards she turned away and began to untie her shoelaces; she would probably have to let them dry a little them smack them against a tree to get some of the dirt off. Her socks seemed equally as dirty, thus she slipped them off and watched as mud smeared onto her hands and fell to the ground below. Next she slipped off the heavy coat that was hanging around her shoulders, placing it somewhere safe then finally unzipped the purple windbreaker and set it aside, revealing the light blue t-shirt below. Some of the blood and muck had managed to touch her wrists, but only to the slightest degree. She closed the distance between her and the stream, rolling up her pant legs all the while. Nyla kept a caution about her as her feet entered the chilly embrace of the water, the gentle flow carrying away the filth.
The blonde's hands met the cold water next, but it did not bother her. Getting completely soaked was the last thing the teen wished to accomplish. Together, her hands worked to rub away the muck that coated them and gradually they returned to their normal pale form. All the while, Nyla debated how she was going to get her tail clean without soaking it; the thing did get pretty heavy after being soaked.

Zeph washed up quickly, and pulled his shirt back on, when he looked over he saw her silently debating and guessed it was about her tail. Not sure exactly how to go about asking (after all girls didn't have tails when he was living among people the last time), he simply went ahead and said it.
"I could help you with your tail...if you don't mind I know how bad fur can get, I've got a brush i use on Ember, and it would be fairly easy."
A little voice at the back of his head laughed at him, saying 'you just want to feel that fur. All those girls chasing you in school, and you couldn't care less, throw some ears and a tail on em, and you get like this? You got issue buddy.' He silenced the voice with mental glare.
