| Dominic straightened his black bowtie in the mirror, his lips pursed in concentration as he fixed himself up for an outing. Using his fingers, he fussed with his hair until it was clean and well-kept in appearance. Next, he pinched his mustache between his fingers and gave each side a curl upward. When he was satisfied, he offered himself a large smile in the mirror before grabbing his knapsack and heading toward the front door. "Mary, I'm heading out. Don't wait for me!"
He lived in a cabin he took over after the apocalypse began. It was definitely a fix-me-up that he put loads of work into. When he discovered the campsite, it was overrun by feral animals and foliage. But Dominic gladly cleared out the wildlife and cleaned out the cabin, fixing broken windows, doors, and foundation where it had been worn down by nature. Now the cabin was clean and well kept. The lock on the door would deter anyone from entering (if they could figure out the combination, that is). Boobytraps were set all along the cabin. But he knew where he placed things and made sure to draw a map up for his caretaker, Mary, who kept the map in her apron.
Once outside, Dominic paused at the entrance to give an assessment. The sun was shining as best as it could through the pine trees. Dominic tilted his head upward with a grin and took in a large breathe, exhaling with complete satisfaction. "What a beautiful day... for a small flight." And with that, Dominic jumped into the air and his body morphed. His body shrunk immensely in size as black, silky feathers sprouted from every inch, and his arms transformed into wings. And just like that, Dominic was a crow. He gave a pleased caw as he flapped his wings, soaring with obvious practice through the trees.
He flew for five minutes before landing on a branch, tilting his head this way and that to see what he could see. This was an outing to gather various herbs and edible vegetation for Mary to cook with. Dominic wasn't sure what he would do without his little maid. He had rescued her a few months ago and she had decided to pay him back through her housework. They were both very grateful and now dependent on each other.
"Caw! Caw! Ca- Oh there we go. Let's see, let's see..." Dominic had turned back into a human, sitting with his legs dangling from a tree, and pulling out a map of the woods from his backpack. His eyes were furrowed as he scanned the page, trying to decide where he should go to gather his goods. |

The sun was hanging in the sky, beams of light filtering through the wonderfully scented branches of pine trees. The forest floor was littered with the tiny green needles of the tree alongside a small amount of leaves. As expected around the area, the ground was soft from the various watery areas that surrounded Little Pine Woods. During the earlier hours of the day, Nyla had set out from her base for a pleasant walk into the forest. Her pace was slow as her eyes scanned her surroundings, happily soaking in the sights that she had viewed a mere few days prior to this expedition.
The blonde's clothing consisted of a pair of pale blue skinny jeans, red running shoes and a simple grey hoodie with a large pocket placed in the center. Her hair still have a red triangle in the bangs and she wore a small amount of eye liner. Gently her tail swayed with joy as she made her say down a path of patted down grass which was likely created by the animals in the area. Her ears were attentive, keeping a vigilant lookout for noise for the sake of her own protection. Nyla's hand remained hidden in the center pocket, holding the hunting knife a friend had given her. Beneath her feet, pine needles crunched, shouting to inform anybody or anything around her of her current location. It racked the blonde's nerves, causing her to remain stiff while her ears merely listened, alas they only heard the crunching. Constantly, the trees shaded her from the sunlight, making her feel a slightly cool despite the warm weather. Nyla's eyes preformed another scan of her surroundings, finding them adequately safe and sound.
A small smile planted itself on her face while her yellow eyes began to investigate her surroundings more thoroughly as she continued on her designated path. The teenager planned to head towards Camp Little Pine for the sake of some pleasant nostalgia of some old summer camp days and to get a view of Trout Lake. Trout Lake could provide a viable food source if she could teach herself how to fish, thus the concept of checking out the area seemed like a delightful idea. If there were little to no dangerous mutated animals in the area and the fish population were not overly threatening, then the concept of using as a food source seemed pleasant. While she walked she gently hummed All The King's Horses by Karmina; a song that she had enjoyed singing in her downtime.
Her ears twitched when they picked up on the sound of cawing, which caused her to tense until it transformed into talking. Nyla's yellow eyes locked onto the direction of the voice and curiosity carried her towards it. While she walked closer, the blonde's right hand clasped around tightly on the hunting knife. It was mostly just for the sake of caution should this mysterious person decide to grow malicious. Eventually, the teen discovered the presumed source of the strange noise, which was a man sitting in a tree with his legs dangling. He wore surprisingly formal clothes, something that the teen had not expected someone to be wearing during the post-apocalypse. For a few moments, Nyla watched him to assess any possible dangers she could face confronting him before striding out from the brush.
"Um, excuse me?" Nyla began to catch his attention before asking, "Watcha doing? If you don't mind me asking."
The blonde was generally curious and considering the little information she had possessed about the situation of some areas, Nyla figured it was better to possibly gain something by talking to this mysterious man. While she stood, awaiting the answer to her question should he decide to provide one, Nyla's eyes remained transfixed on the stranger. The last thing the teen desired was any repercussions for letting her guard down around him.

| "Hm?" Dominic dropped his hands so he could look over the map to see who was talking to him. It was a mutant standing on the ground. She was watching him closely, no doubt cautious of her discovery. But who wouldn't be cautious during the apocolypse? Dom himself was chastising himself for not paying closer attention to signs of company. If this mutant had been the aggressive type, he would have been caught by surprise. The thought itself caused him to tsk. Dominic was cautious of wildlife, but why wouldn't he pay attention to the signs of mutants? Not all of them were so nice...
"Oh, well, I'm looking at my map." Using one hand, he picked it up and gave it a shake, the paper crinkling with the motion, to indicate that this was the item in question. "It's good to have if you don't know where to go. Which happens to me a lot, actually. I'm not always sure where I've been and where I need to go next. Heh, it's a handy little device."
Dominic wasn't partial in telling the girl the whole truth. Why tell her he was looking for food? He was being careful not to give away too much information in case she decided to take form his sources. There had been times in the past where he lent others his trust and they had greatly taken advantage of him. He was not going to let that happen ever again. But he couldn't toss aside everyone he met either. Friends were nice to make and have. Should he see if this girl was worth trusting?
Dominic nodded to himself, as if coming to an agreement with himself. He folded up the map and carefully placed it in his bag before lunging from the tree, landing surprisingly gracefully in front of the girl. He straightened up to brush the dust and lingering bark bits from his pants before extending his hand in introduction. "The name's Dominic. Handsome, clever, and a dash of crazy."
Offering her a wink, he chuckled to himself. This interaction was exciting. He had never seen a mutant up close like this before. Her ears were amazing. The desire to touch them almost propelled him to do so, but he stood as still as stone to prevent from offending his company. |

A cautious gaze was kept as Nyla watched the mysterious man in the tree. Her tail swayed gently and her mind prayed for friendliness since the blonde teen constantly craved social interaction. Alas, she dared not to let her guard down; which kept her ears pricked and her senses keen should a malicious move be made, however, that seemed unlikely. The man peeked over the edge of the paper, giving Nyla the chance to catch a glance at his face, it seemed an attack was not probable, but one could never be certain. She watched as he indicated to the map, which somewhat explained why she had discovered the fellow sitting on a tree branch with the paper.
"I see, that must be awfully handy. Don't have one myself, might have to start looking for one. Would be super good for planning stuff, or at least I imagine so." Nyla responded, her voice a friendly one. "I myself am out doing some scoutin'. Haven't see too much and it seems pretty quiet, which is always good. Don't need any mutated animals coming around and making a total mess of everything, eh?"
The mutant girl hoped that the man had no secret plans of the malicious sort, thus her wits remained and the grasp on the knife's handle remained firm. Nyla knew well that she still required allies to survive the brutal atmosphere of the apocalypse, it was merely necessity given all the difficulties. Allies were simply a major advantage for survival which kept the blonde's friendly attitude intact despite the gloom. Her eyes remained on him as he silently confirmed something unbeknownst to the mutated teenager, tucked his map away and suddenly launched from the tree.
Nyla gave a slight squeak in surprise, backpedaling a few steps even though the man would not crash into her. The grip on her knife was released and her pale hands slid out from her hoodie's pocket. Her hands went up, fingers splayed until her ears managed to pick on the sound of the man landing. While the mysterious man brushed the dust and bark bits from his pants, Nyla lowered her hands to remain at her side.
When he introduced himself with a wink, Nyla laughed gently and took the offered hand. "A pleasure to meet ya. My name's Nyla, and unfortunately I did not practice an introduction," she responded with another chuckle. Part of her wished she had a planned introduction now.
A small smile was present on her face, she had a feeling she was going to enjoy having Dominic as company. He did not seem to carry any malicious intentions, which was always a pleasant thing to see, but of course her caution remain in case he was a wolf in sheep's clothing. Nyla hated having to keep a strict caution about people, but there were no choices when somebody gets launched into the apocalypse.

| "Yes," He agreed with a smile, "It is quite handy. Perhaps you could find one in a gas station- given there's still one standing. Or if you're patient and have neat writing, I could always let you draw a copy of this map. I always have writing utensils and paper in pack. You never know when you have to scribble down a note or a drawing. And, well, It's quite easy if you have a map as your reference. Heh."
Dominic shook Nyla's hand with the pleasant smile remaining on his face. He appeared thankful and pleased that he had run into the mutant. Sometimes all you need is an unexpected meeting. He hoped she would not take advantage of him or his kindness, but the only way to ensure she wouldn't would be to keep his guard up. The apocalypse often brought the desperate... and all of them had different masks to cover their true faces. Could he blame them? So many survivors were young. Terribly young. Dominic sometimes thought of himself as quite young; but in comparison to all the people he's met... teens and early twenties occupied the majority. That made him the oldest. How sad.
"Nyla. I like that. Your hands are very soft, might I add. And no worries about intros, you don't see much formalities these days anyway. You know- if you don't mind me saying- I've never seen a mutant up close before. Was it odd to get use to your tail? The ears? I for one can say I came out of the bombing having to get use to a few.. tricks, I suppose. But I must admit, it's come in handy with surviving out here. Makes me wonder how the regulars get by without."
Dominic thought on what he said, wondering how this offered information about himself would sit with Nyla. Hopefully she would take it as a way the two could relate and not as a threat. He could hardly blame anyone from feeling threatened when he hinted towards the fact that he was gifted. Hell, Nyla had heard the caw of a crow and yet there wasn't a devlish black bird attacking them. He was sure she could figure it out that that had been him, even if he hadn't said a thing. She didn't look stupid.
Glancing left and right to check for signs of danger, he leaned in a bit closer to the teenage mutant and loudly whispered "You know, I'm about to go exploring. Do you want to join me?" He straightened up, looking mysterious but not unkind. He said louder, "I think you'll like what I could offer you. It tastes very good in a soup. Well, assuming you would be comfortable coming back to my cabin later. My dear Mary makes enough for a legion, I swear. We'll be eating 'til our stomaches ache." |

The suggestion of drawing herself a copy was an excellent idea, Nyla did adore the world of art. Before the blonde had the chance to ponder where exactly to gain paper and a pencil, the mysterious and helpful man offered her some. A smile flashed on the girl's face, she was truly thankful for the offer since maps would naturally contain some usefulness; she was also grateful for the art skills she possessed. Nyla honestly was not aware they could have come in handy during the post-apocalypse except providing her with a steady hand.
"Perfect, I can draw my own copy. Before all of this," she pointed to herself with her thumb, "I use to draw a lot. Loved it, and I was even good enough to get commissions so I could probably do a quick sketch for myself, if you don't mind that is. I could draw my copy later if you need your map at the moment, it isn't a biggie if I gotta wait. It would be ten times easier to draw a copy for now at least, would allow me to get my barring when I travel about until I got a good copy."
It almost seemed that a majority of the time the fox-eared girl headed out that somebody had something useful to offer her in kindness. Zephyr (upon thought of his name, Nyla gave a quiet giggle) had offered some combat training alongside other useful skills that survival books provide and now this stranger who offered her the chance to copy his map. Clearly, Nyla had gained some fortune with the survivors she had met during these outings since most were pleasant. The smile Dominic offered her grew contagious as the teen found the corners of her own mouth drawing up into a lip-tight smile. She had not met a fellow similar to him and a majority of the people she had met during the apocalypse were younger, more around her age. Nyla cocked her head at the comment about her hands, she was starting to wonder if she should start getting use to random people giving her compliments. Then, the topic changed to that of her mutations, which she presumed that most people grow curious of.
"Oh, yes, very. The tail wasn't too bad, but my ears make me hear a lot better than before. It's how I figured out you were here actually, I heard you talking from a little ways off." She explained it simply, but did not bother to elaborate on her tail since the main difference was keeping the thing clean and the slight weight it created which did not seem interesting. "I think it can be truly a wonder that anybody gets by to be honest. The mutations those animals get can be pretty dangerous and sometimes it's difficult to defend oneself from them."
The blonde did not bother to push on the topic of Dominic's abilities, mostly because she considered it fair if the man did not trust her enough yet; however, it did explain the lack of vicious crows. They had merely conversed for a small amount of time and were only acquaintances as it currently stood. Although, Nyla did keep her senses sharp just in case these abilities turned out to be detriment to her. She did have Ines to take care of, thus she knew that she would have to be careful. When he leaned in to whisper to her, Nyla's ear slightly flicked at the mention of exploring. It gave her the chance to find some things for herself and Ines and company during the apocalypse was always a pleasant.
"Sounds like fun. Maybe, if it's alright with you, I could take some home for my little sister. She would definitely appreciate it and it saved me trying to scrounge something decent up for her. Speaking of which, the cabin you mentioned, is it by the lake? Cause I was thinking of trying some fishing for food at some point if it would work out. Of course depends on what the fish are like and how dangerous it is down there. Any chance you can give me some insight?" Nyla asked in a pleasant manner, hoping that she could gain some information about the lack before she headed there later on.

| "Oh really? Hm, I use to love watching people draw and colour. It's very therapeutic. Though I can't do any art worth a damn- just a few chicken scratch pictures." Dom paused, briefly looking mournful as he reminisced, "Hm, I wish things like art never crumbled. Museums, galleries... all lost. But what use is it now, I suppose. Culture has no use to those who wish to survive. Anyway... yes, I will let you copy my map back at the cabin. I don't want to risk it getting wet. That's one negative about this little forest." Dominic straightened his back, letting it crack before sighing. Though his socks and shoes were a bit damp, it was nothing in comparison to when he had to wade through thick marshy spots. That was when he grumbled as his feet became soaked and uncomfortable. Mary often gave him hell because she was the one who generally had to dry his things. She would often complain about how stinky they were, something that would leave Dominic hanging his head in embarrassment. It wasn't as if he could control any of it!
Dominic tilted his head as he listened to Nyla with complete fascination on his face. He wondered what the psychological effects would have been to have come out of the Madman bombing with animal characteristics. He supposed the enhanced hearing would be a plus, but it still would have been odd. Dominic sniffed to himself, coming to the conclusion that Nyla probably felt as Dom did when he first turned into a crow. The experience had been horrifying and it took some time to control his emotions and powers... but it had proven to be useful and exhilarating.
He offered the girl a shrug, agreeing with her silently. "Those creatures are a nuisance, aren't they? I shouldn't have spoke with such naiveté. I've had my fair share of run-ins with some bad boys. You're right, I imagine, all of us are always in danger. Which is why I think it is paramount to work together. But alas, not everyone shares this viewpoint."
The mention of the river left Dominic to purse his lips. He was thoughtful but no longer smiling. The girl was thinking of fishing. Sure, it was a wonderful way to get food... but it didn't come without it's risks. "Well, you do have to be aware of the changes. The fish were affected too, of course, by that damned chemical. However, I have come to learn that the fish that have the most obvious mutations are safest to eat while fish that appear to not have been affected- or minimally so- are not safe to eat. I've made the mistake of eating a normal looking trout and was paralyzed for an entire 24 hours! Scary experience, let me tell you. And of course, besides being cautious of the fish, water is known to attract thirsty animals. So if you want to fish, don't drop your guard. Unless you're like me and enjoy setting up traps and warnings... I'd advise finding another source of food."
Satisfied with his warning, Dominic smiled once more. He raised his hand and beckoned her before turning around and starting to walk in what appeared to be a random direction. But Dominic walked with so much confidence it would be hard to doubt he didn't know where he was going. He gave a little whistle as he marched along, appearing happy with himself. He stopped his whistling and looked around the woods, stopping in his tracks to crouch and touch the ground. There were tracks that lead toward the same direction they were going. They appeared to be from a deer, and luckily there was only one. "Che, where's this one going? Keep moving or take the long route. What do you think, Nyla?" |

It was a pleasantry to the fox-eared girl to hear that her newly discovered company had some art appreciation. Art was one of the many topics that Nyla had an intense passion for ever since she was a mere child. She had been well acquainted with relaxation of watching another person do art since it was a common household activity when her parents were still alive. A brief frown appeared on her face at the thought of her parents, as expected she missed them greatly.
It caused her to nod in agreement to the misfortune of culture losing value on the post-apocalypse. "Yes, it is truly a misfortune. I've always loved art, and seeing it become an invaluable piece of society makes me sad. However, once the hardships have ended, perhaps culture will return or at least I hope so. Anyways, that's understandable. I wouldn't be able to copy off a ruined map, so it's completely understandable. Thanks, it's nice to see some people willing to help their fellow survivor. There is a bunch of survivors who would have probably just robbed me and been on their way." It was an unfortunate truth, there were after all no laws during the post-apocalypse and no repercussions for amoral acts.
Nyla was also well aware of the damp grounds of Little Pine Woods from her previous ventures, some of which involved doing into the muddy Trout Marsh. For a moment, she glanced down at her own footwear to find the typical dampness, some of which may have been created from the morning dew encountered when she began her adventure. The blonde merely shrugged it off and returned her focus to the conversation; after walking around through the muddy swamp a little dampness seemed to be the least of her worries. The way Dominic's face showed fascination in the concept of her ears and tails was definitely interesting, likely because Nyla usually did not get inquired about her mutated features. If the blonde was to guess, it was probably because gifts were a more interesting topic to explore instead of things like ears, tails and fangs.
When Dominic began to inform her about the dangers he discovered from fishing, Nyla nodded and made certain to mentally record what he said. By the sounds of it, risks were high which made it seem unlikely that fishing would be the best way to get food, but the fox-eared girl knew that if fishing became necessity the information would be needed. She especially noted what the man stated on how less mutated fish seem to render worst repercussions and how more mutated ones were usually safe to eat.
"Thank-you, again. I will keep that in mind if I do decide to fish. It sounds like a pretty dangerous thing to do, but I will make sure I come prepared if I do decide to fish, but I will keep my options open and see if I can find something better. There ought to be something a little easier to hunt, eh?" Nyla responded, a quaint smile of appreciation tugging the corner of her lips up.
Her yellow eyes watched as she was beckoned over, it appeared it was time to get moving. The blonde's smile broadened as she began to walk forward to follow her new acquaintance with hopes of friendship. She always did find a joy in making friends after all and it was always reassuring to know somebody likely to be friendly towards her. For a few moments she had a slight skip in her step as she followed, Nyla had a feeling this would be fun. Her tail gently swayed while she walked and her ears remained tentative and surveyed for sounds other than their walking. Her ears easily picked up the whistling and she soon joined in the tune, but in a quiet hum instead; she had never been particularly good at whistling. When the whistling ceased, Nyla followed suit and hushed herself, slowing herself down as she approached where Dominic was crouched. There were tracks that were similar to that of a deer's, which meant possible danger lurked.
"Hmm, we could keep going. I can hear real well, so if I think I hear it I can tell ya. However, I can only imagine the danger could get pretty bad if were not careful," Nyla began. She thought for a moment, her mind weighing the possibilities until she arrived at the 'better safe than sorry' phrase. "I think the long route is better though. We can't possibly know what that deer is capable of after all."

| "I'm not sure if our culture will ever be the same." Dominic admitted to Nyla. He was starting to get more intimate than he would like, but he was craving another friendship. Allies were hard to come by these days, and Dom was foolishly pushing his trust and good graces on this young mutant. It was too soon, but he felt as if he couldn't help himself. A part of him needed to feel useful and loved. "Society could very well develop into what we once were, but it will certainly be different. Things like art will transform. I wonder if paintings and literature will focus on the apocalypse. That is a common thing for mankind... to focus on their hardships and miseries."
Dominic straightened up just then, shaking his head and offered Nyla a large smile. "Ah, yes, of course. I wish to see more survivors helping each other. To me, that is the only way to truly survive. Maybe I should start my own Aimon Settlement. It'll be open to everyone as long as you have good intentions." He sniffed at the thought. It was only a partial joke, but there was some desire and truth behind it.
When Nyla thanked him for the fishing knowledge he provided, he gave a her a nod. "No problem. It's better to share what we know. If you need to fish, perhaps I could assist you. I know the river well enough and have some equipment designed to make the trip safer. I'm not the keenest of letting anyone borrow my things, I hope you can understand. It is why I'd prefer joining you. We could both get some protein out of the trip."
Dominic wouldn't mind the company. Mary always stayed in the cabin. The farthest she ever ventured was just outside to tend to the mini herb garden beside the back door. He couldn't blame her... she was older and not well equipped to defend for herself. Still, it made Dominic's trips lonely. If he offered Nyla assistance, maybe she would want to make a monthly- or even weekly- trip to the woods to accompany Dominic on his ventures. He would fairly split what they collected and caught together, that was a guarantee.
When the two of them encountered the cross roads with the deer tracks, he listened attentively as Nyla gave her opinion. He agreed with it. It was always better to be safe than to find yourself face first in trouble. However, he did give a sigh of annoyance. Going the long way added extra time in their travels which decreased the time he could spend doing other things. Oh well. He had a younger person he had to keep out of trouble. "Of course. Let's go around then. Follow me, if you please."
Dominic began walking to the right, looking for any more signs of danger. They walked for ten minutes with Dominic muttering comments to Nyla (though really it was him just talking to himself) about this and thats. He said nothing of true importance, just little comments about the woods and the creatures that he came across. The deer whose tracks they saw, he insisted, must have been the blue-hued deer that he saw eating out of his garden a week ago. That had frustrated him and chasing it away proved to be difficult. That little bastard, Dominic was sure to add, was the most persistent deer he had ever encountered in the woods, but definitely not the most dangerous.
It was then that Dominic stopped once more. Right in front of them were another set of deer tracks, going the same way the previous tracks were headed. "Oh. I'm starting to think.... I'm starting to think..." His eyebrows furrowed in immense concentration as he was obviously thinking of explanations. "They... are definitely going the way we want to go. Well isn't that swell? These deer are smart, aren't they? They must have been watching me and where I get my greens. Damn. Well, they'll be surprised with my little tricks. I knew I'd run into this problem eventually. Well, I'd prepare yourself if I were you. Looks like we're gonna have to go deer chasing. How exciting!" |

When Dominic mentioned that culture would never return to its original state, Nyla nodded since it was pure truth. Nobody could recover the past treasures that were once renowned and infamous despite the depictions of past tragedies. They would merely paint new ones and contribute their artistic abilities to showing the future world the misfortunes of the apocalypse. It was simple fact that some people seem to dwell on the negatives instead of the positives and it made Nyla feel somewhat sad. Society would be rebuilt someday, but it would be forever warped by the events that led up to and occurred in the post-apocalyptic world.
"Indeed, the misfortunes often seem to outweigh the beautiful times. They will likely be telling tales of survival for centuries and you will hear about the apocalypse in every history book until something more tragic happens and they flock to the topic." Nyla had been wearing a frown, but soon her frown gave way to a small smile. "Maybe if I continue my path down art I will ignore the hardships. That way there is one less artist telling the world of all the bad things."
The concept seemed pleasant to the blonde teenager, she figured that at least she could be somebody who painted in happier colours. It fueled her lip-tight smile, she was enjoying the thought and a brought a warm feeling to her. Her yellow eyes remained on her companion, she was enjoying this acquaintance and it seemed they seemed to share some opinions which was always a pleasant sign when someone was striving for friendship. What especially confirmed her desire for friendship was the way Dominic mentioned that working together made surviving the apocalypse easier. Without cooperation she could not even imagine where she would be, but Nyla knew she definitely would have gotten herself into a couple of binds.
"So true. I probably would have gotten myself into a lot of trouble a few days back if I hadn't met this guy who helped me out. In this case teamwork really is necessary and it's truly shameful that people don't see that or use the apocalypse to do crimes and such." The last sentence of her comment had slight notes of anger; she really hated that people did not help each other out in this dangerous world. She smiled at the thought of an Aimon Settlement that accepted only people with good intentions. "I hear ya. I didn't bother joining since it seemed like a risk should any gifts develop, even though I highly doubt it. Besides, they aren't always the most welcoming bunch to mutants."
In complete honesty, Nyla would likely join a settlement if it was welcoming to mutants and would take excellent care of her little sister. Taking care of Ines in the midst of the apocalypse was obviously a very difficult task and the idea of assistance was divine. Upon mention of assistance with fishing, Nyla happily nodded.
"That would be rad! Maybe we could work together, that way we both benefit. Also, totally understandable, you never know who you can trust or who may just break something on ya. I wouldn't want anyone borrowing my stuff, especially if I didn't know them too well." There was complete understanding in her voice on the topic since Nyla had refused her friends to borrow things knowing they would lose the item, never return it or simply end up breaking it.
Nyla had to admit that having somebody to explore the vast wilderness of Iona island with seemed like an excellent idea, especially if they were a knowledgeable sort who started interesting conversations. It was an improvement from working alone and having to face the threat of mutated animals or the more vicious survivors without a helping hand. When they reached the crossroads and she stated the safer path would be better, she noticed Dominic's sigh of annoyance, perhaps she had made a bad choice? Either way the teen figured that even if she had, a single bad choice was unlikely to ruin anything between them. During the ten minutes of walking, Nyla's acquaintance began a spree of muttering that Nyla could easily hear, but at times had minor difficulties following. She was beginning to become unsure whether or not the comments were meant for her ears.
She took immediate note when he stopped, which caused the teen to take a few hasty steps to decrease the distance so she could see what he was looking at. The fox-eared girl's yellow eyes immediately noticed the deer prints that littered the path. When Dominic began stating that he was thinking, Nyla's gaze latched onto him as she waited to hear what his thoughts were. She listened to the words, but her expression turned to puzzled when it came to 'deer chasing', but she was curious.
"Okay, then what do you have in mind if you care to fill me in? Nyla asked, a small smile upon her face. Chances were if Dominic was excited, deer chasing was probably a fun activity.

| "Oh, I would love to." Dominic cooed, bouncing up and down like a child. Deer chasing, admittingly, was dangerous and was a task that should be taken seriously. When coming face to face with any wild animal in the apocalypse, you had to be ready for the oncoming risks and potential dangers.
Dominic swung his backpack off of his shoulders, placing it in front of him on the ground and began digging in search of useable bits of technology. "Well, the beautiful activity I call Deer Chasing is my means to get deer to leave my gardens alone. I've put a lot of work into finding edible plants and cultivating berry bushes, so you could imagine how hard I try to prevent other animals from eating my plants. Deer can eat anything green in these woods. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for us humanoids. I see no harm chasing any animal away."
Giving an "ah-ha!" after finding the equipment he was digging for, Dominic pulled it out and held it up to Nyla, grinning with glee. The device was a vest with metal wire running all along the front and back. In sets of six on the front, there were small domes that appeared to be lightbulbs. He handed it to his mutant friend and was ready to instruct her how to put it on. "This vest is of my creation. It's a prototype, hence it not looking the greatest. But I work with what I can get. This beauty here, once I energize it, has two options. One is a solid bright light, and the other blinks. I have discovered that deer are still very sensitive to light like they were before Maras. Some freeze, others run. Runners are obvious, you just chase them and they flee from the bright light... and once they are far enough you can stop chasing them. They usually don't return- at least not for a while. If they freeze, at least it allows you to safely approach. Then you can give them a little zap with this!"
Dominic was already pulling out another small device. He held it up and pushed a button, allowing it to extend into a long rod. It was a cow prong. He double clicked the same button, grinning as the end sparked like a live wire. "Don't worry about harming them, it just gives them a sting so they run away. I've made sure not to make it too strong- I don't want them to get angry at me and come back for revenge, after all. And they definitely would if I harmed one of their own... as in leave a mark on its romp. So, to turn the rod on and off, you just double click this button here. One click will put it away back to travelling size. Think you're up for it?"
Dominic only had one vest and decided it would be better used on Nyla. He wasn't sure how equipped the girl was to protect herself, so wanted her to have the item that would prevent the deer from attacking her. Dominic would be left on his own... but he wasn't too worried. If worse came to worse he could always transform and fly into a tree. Most deer would give up straight away from their attack.
Digging into his bag a final time, he pulled out a second of the cow prongs, ready to use it for himself. He offered Nyla a reassuring smile and began following the tracks towards his gardens. His pace was quick, but he was certain to look behind him to make sure Nyla was keeping up. If she ever lagged behind, he slowed enough so she could catch up once more. "Oh, one last thing, if you think you're in trouble just give me a little shout and I'll be right there." |

The pricked ears on the blonde's head got prepared to listen to the instructions she would be relayed. From what she could tell, Dominic was excited to tell her about the wonders of deer chasing. It caused Nyla to wonder how amazing deer chasing could be with the excited manner that Dominic jumped up and down like a child. She was not completely certain that it was a good idea, but was somewhat reassured by the excited attitude that Dominic possessed towards the sport. When the man swung off his pack and began rummaging through it, Nyla managed to catch a glimpse at the pieces of tech within the bag. Her yellow eyes widened, this was definitely going to be an interesting day.
Politely, Nyla listened, but her eyes remained glued to Dominic's bag of curiosities as she wondered what he would produce from the bag for the activity of deer chasing. She nodded while he spoke, understanding every word with ease. Getting plants could tend to be a difficulty during the apocalypse since there was plenty of competition for the plant life that inhabited the world. Even prior to Madman people struggled to keep nasty animals out of their gardens and it was either chase them away, trap and release them or simply kill the creature. When Dominic pulled out the vest, Nyla backpedaled a couple of steps out of surprise. Her eyes looked at the metal wire vest that was covered in light bulbs. The mutant cocked her head to the right, she definitely was not expecting a light bulb covered vest to be taken out of the bag.
When Dominic began explaining, Nyla understood instantly since she remembered the old saying 'like a deer in headlights'. The light would be likely to stun a majority of the animals with the exception of those who may have adapted. She watched at the cattle prong extended and the small sparks glitter at the two metal pieces at the end. She folded her ears to the buzzing, it was not overly loud, but was a tad annoying to hear with her fine tuned ears. Nyla had to admit, she was rather amazed at the plan that Dominic devised for getting rid of the deer.
She nodded, confirming that she was prepared to handle this interesting task. "Wow, that's awesome! That's such a clever plan," Nyla said cheerfully. She flashed him a toothy grin and placed her hands on her hips. "I must admit, I'm thoroughly impressed."
Nyla tentatively took the took the vest, she had never expected to be wearing a vest of wires today. Her yellow eyes analyzed the piece further, it was most certainly a curious item. She carefully put the wire vest on, looking at the piece. It was definitely strange to wear, but the wires were loose around her; likely due to the fact she was smaller than Dominic. She followed Dominic, lagging behind a tad while she grew used to the wire vest, however, she managed to keep a decent pace. Every so often she would lag behind, but found that Dominic was considerate enough to slow a little so she could catch up to him again. Quietly, she pondered what deer chasing would be like. When Nyla heard Dominic speak again, she offered a nod.
"I should be fine, I can hold my own rather well for not having any rad gifts. Plus, I'm essentially going to be a giant headlight. So I imagine I would be safer then you," Nyla stated. "You be careful, alright? I don't like it when people get hurt. I also did not bring any first aid supplies, so it would definitely be rough if you got hurt."

| Dominic beamed in pure delight to have his intelligence praised. He was liking Nyla more and more. He really wanted to keep her around if she was going to be so pleasant and sweet. Even before the apocalypse, Dominic was a very smart man who craved to be told such a thing. The only surprise was that he found himself being very patient with his companion. Perhaps this was due to her understanding every word he had said? But what wasn't there to understand, Dominic wondered.
Dominic began tinkering with the vest that was now on Nyla so he could be sure everything was in order. When he was satisfied, he nodded. The lights were nice and bright, perfect for blinding and startling those pesky deer. It was only a matter of time before the excitement began, and so they headed on their way to the garden. For now, he switched the lights off to reserve energy.
The worry in Nyla's voice for him was also a nice thing to hear. People caring about each other... that's what the end of the world should really be about. He flashed her a friendly smile, offering a wink as well as he said, matter-of-factly, "Don't you fret, my dear, I will be perfectly fine. And note that as confidence, not egotism. I've done this many, many times. And though, yes, I normally would have the vest... I have other means of protection as you may have noticed with the, well, shapeshifting. But yes, thank you for your concern. If anything happens, don't you fret, I have a small kit in my bag. As long as we have it, we'll be fine."
They kept going through the forests, stopping every once in a while so Dominic could check the tracks. They were getting fresher and fresher. After a few more minutes of tracking, Dominic lifted his hand to indicate they should halt. His golden-brown eyes darted this way and that, scanning the area before him. The garden was in view. There were barbwire fences up all around the parameter, though some sections had collapsed.
With as smirk, Dominic turned to Nyla and whispered. "There they are, do you see them? There are three of them. We can flank them to scare them since they are huddled by the berry bush over there. The blue one... he's a pain in my butt, I'll tell you. He's their leader so be careful. So, on the count of three, you run to the left with your vest on, I'll take the right, and we'll give those buggers a zap to get them out of there. Try to direct them towards where the fence has fallen to prevent more damage to it. If it's not possible, don't feel bad about it. I can repair it, after all."
About fifteen yards in front of the two, there were three deer gathered, taking advantage of the berry bush. They were picking at it without any worries in the world. Two of the deer were a light brown with white speckles and long fangs protruding from their mouths. They also had odd growths coming from each side of their torsos, sagging with the weight. The third deer was a dusky blue, with fangs like the other two. Instead of the growths, the deer had large antlers, bigger than any a deer post-apocalypse would ever had. It was potentially a sign of its strength since it was obviously unbothered by the weight as it moved around and ate.
"Please be careful, my friend. Alright. 3... 2... 1... go!" Dominic flicked the prong so it expanded and burst from the bushes, going to the right of the deer group and whooping in both delight and aggression towards the deer. |

When delight touched Dominic's features the teen noticed it immediately, clearly he appreciated praise for his intellect. Then again, who did not find genuine compliments pleasing? As of understanding, Nyla found it very easy considering her extroverted attitude prior to the apocalypse and her high intellect. She had also enjoyed the nerdy conversations that occurred between her and friends that would hardly make sense to most, but them, thus her comprehension was better. When Dominic began tinkering with the wire vest, Nyla lifted her arms since she thought it would make it easier. Her yellow eyes watched him work on the headlight vest until the lights turned on and she became a flashlight of sorts.
"Wow, I'm like a giant flashlight. This is totally awesome," Nyla stated. She was not completely certain if being a giant headlight was a good thing at the moment, but it was still interesting nonetheless. "Where did you learn how to do this anyways?"
The teen was genuinely curious since during her schooling there had been no offering of courses that approved of making inventions. She was naturally be certain in that considering if it existed she would have taken it in a heart beat. The thought of being able to create things, including unique headlight vests, seemed like a ton of enjoyment to Nyla. She watched as the light's flickered off, clearly to preserve energy for the upcoming deer chasing to take place. Tentatively, Nyla held her zapper as her eyes scanned the device that was unfamiliar to her. Once she felt more certain to how the machine worked she tightened her grip on it to make certain that she would not drop it. The smile that Dominic flashed her while stating that he would be alright was reassuring.
"Well, either way. Anybody can catch an unlucky break and these deer will be pretty dangerous," Nyla said, crossing her arms a moment. "I will keep the kit in mind though, I learned a lot of first aid to make sure I could help Ines -that's my little sister by the way- just in case she got hurt. I can tell ya that I've gotten pretty good at taking care of wounds."
Being an over-protective older sister came with specific duties, and one of those duties were making certain that if the target of one's protective tendencies got hurt that said person know how to make them feel better. It was mandatory, especially too Nyla considering to her Ines was the light of her world that could never been out shined. The two had been through a lot together after all, so naturally Nyla would feel a strong connection towards her darling little sister opposed to anyone else. The fox-eared girl kept following her acquaintance with curiosity shining in her yellow eyes, she was wondering how this would go. While she walked, the vest made some rustling noises, something that was likely to be unavoidable. When they neared the garden, Nyla noticed the tracks getting fresher and when they arrived she noticed the collapsed sections of barbed wire. Clearly, that was how the deer had managed to enter. At they closed in, Nyla's ears pricked and managed to pick up the odd sounds of hooves on dirt alongside Dominic's whispering.
She nodded while her eyes looked at the vampire akin deer. "Alright, I will do my best to herd them out of the space and be the best headlight I can." Nyla had never thought she would be attempting to be the best headlight.
While she awaited for Dominic's command, Nyla decided to analyse her opponents. There were a pair of light brown deer sporting white speckles, growths and long fangs. Then lastly, there was the leader, a blue one with fangs and a large pair of antlers that looked rather menacing. When Dominic began counting down, Nyla got prepared to flip the vest back on and once go hit she was off. The blonde's long legs carried her with haste and her left hand managed to turn the lights on with ease. Naturally, the deer were rather shocked by the sudden presence of people during their grazing and likely a walking headlight as well. Nyla did her best to make aggressive noises in an attempt to scare the deer. One of the light brown ones near her seemed stunned by the sudden light display, thus Nyla wasted no time getting behind the creature and giving it a quick zap. It jolted forward in surprise and began making its way towards the exit. Whether it was out of fear or simply annoyance, Nyla was uncertain.
