OPEN- N/A- 726
| The air was still and heavy on the summer night. The humidity caused laziness to wash over the Aimon Settlement, and yet busy bodies were heard working away on various tasks despite the time. Most were patrol units going for their shifts or coming back from them. Nora-Jean was sure to never leave a window of time where the settlement wasn't guarded. Alex was always busy taking care of everyone and everything in order to keep the Settlement running, organizing patrols was the least Nora could do in contribution.
With a rifle in her hand, Nora-Jean paced the wall, staring out at the open for any signs of movement. The night, though quiet, had a strange air about it. It put the woman on edge. Her eyes scanned the horizon again... but there was nothing to be seen. She let out a quick breath of air before continuing, slowly, across the wall. Suddenly, there was shouting from within the Settlement. She whipped around, nerves on edge with the expectation to see a gifted or mutant gone berserk, but the scene wasn't so gruesome. A group of guys were shoving someone around, taunting their victim in their drunken state. Nora growled, frustrated that her own people would turn on each other and cause a commotion.
"Hey!" She shouted, pulling her rifle to rest across her back by the strap before running across the wall and launching herself down the steps. Crossing the space between herself and the rowdy group quickly, she tightly grasped one of the drunk men's shoulders and pulled him back. "Break it up. Right now." They all backed up to see who had stopped their mischief and some of the men looked nervous.
The person in the centre was just a kid, a mutant kid. Nora-Jean's eyes lightened up as she looked at him. He was crying quietly, clutching something against his chest tightly. Nora reached her hand out, bringing the child closer to her while she shot the men a harsh look. She recognized one of them, Styles, from a few weeks prior. He had spoken out against mutants and the gifted being a part of the Settlement. He was known for spreading hate within the Settlement, and that was a fire Nora wanted to stomp out before it could get going. She would sure to report this back to Alex when she got the chance. "Go home and sober up. I don't want to see you out here again. Do you understand me?"
"Yes, commander." Said two of the men, but Styles just stared with rage in his eyes. Was he going to fight her? The other men began to back up, looking uncertain when Styles didn't follow. A different man than the two who had spoken reached out and touched Styles' shoulder, "C'mon, let's go." But Styles shrugged him off.
"Citizen..." Nora-Jean said in a warning voice. "You are dismissed." The kid's fox ears laid flat on his head, looking fearful at Styles and cuddling up closer to Nora's leg. She gave the boy a reassuring pat on the head before pulling him further back so she was between him and Styles.
"You bloody mutant lover. Why protect them? They're a danger to us!" Styles spat at Nora's shoes, looking disgusted with her.
"This child is of no threat to you. Go. Home." Nora-Jean clenched her fist, feeling the tension increasing between them. Styles was ready to attack. And sure enough, he ran at Nora, throwing a punch at her head. But Nora was swift and she dodged to the left, lifting her arms to grab his arm and pin it behind his back. He let out a yelp but continued to struggle, trying to escape Nora's grip.
Nora shoved Styles into the other men, allowing them to catch his drunken body. "Attacking a commander is a punishable offence. I'm letting you off with a warning... I suggest you take it."
But the group didn't move and Styles was furious. He pushed everyone off of him and yelled as he ran towards Nora again. Once again, she sidestepped out of his way, letting out a sigh. Style's staggered as he stopped, whipping around with a growl to face Nora once more. It appeared dealing with this man was going to be a pain. She was going to have to detain him...

The night sky was clear except for a few clouds here and there. Endless stars dotted the sky and the moon shone brightly. Despite the heat, many were still at work. It pleased Xander to see people still hard at work. He had decided to go for a walk tonight and see how things were going and to just visit the settlers. The only indication that he might be warm were his sleeves, rolled up to his elbows. He walked along, stopping occasionally to speak with settlers. He listened to complaints and suggestions, writing them down in a small notebook. It was in his and everyone’s best interest to keep people happy.
He was speaking to one of the younger residents, listening as the boy told him a story when he heard something. He politely shushed the boy and listened, trying to find the source of the noise. It seemed to be coming from near the wall. He turned to the boy and pat his head, telling him that he would return after he went to check on something. Alex entered the courtyard and immediately spotted the source of the noise. A group of men were standing around watching as one of his commanders fought someone. A sigh left his lips and he moved swiftly towards the fight.
Nora seemed to be holding her own, but the other man was clearly drunk. He was one of the regular troublemakers and Xander was unsurprised that he was part of the altercation. She shoved him into the group, but he clearly wasn’t ready to give up. He rushed at her and she dodged. This only angered him and he spun around ready to attack. Raising his fist, the man swung, but Xander stepped between the two. Grabbing his wrist, Xander spun him around and pinned his arm behind his back.
“That’s enough. You know fully well that fighting is prohibited in the settlement and if that isn’t enough, you assaulted one of my officers.” He turned his head to look at the woman behind him. “Are you alright? What happened here?”
NOTES; Sorry for the low word count, I'm a bit low on muse.

| Nora grimaced as Xander appeared, nearly out of thin air, to stop the fighting between herself and Styles. She felt mildly ashamed, but reassured herself that she was in the right. Stopping violence was part of the job. She was doing what she was sure Xander would want her to do.
"Captain." Nora-Jean instantly stood at attention and saluted him. She would remain that way until Xander called her at ease. Old habits died hard. "I was patrolling the wall when I heard these men shouting. When I arrived to investigate, I witnessed these men pushing and taunting this young boy here. As suspected, Styles was the agitator. In my attempt to dismiss them back to their homes, I was attacked. You saw the rest."
Nora glanced towards Styles, an angry look still on his face. At least he was deterred from moving now that Xander was present. It was slightly annoying that she didn't hold the same respect among these men. Was it because she was new? Xander was the one to start up the Aimon Settlement. That would make anyone respect you. He was basically seen as the father of all. At least those were the whisperings Nora-Jean had heard throughout the settlement.
At that moment, she was determined to do and be better. If not for Xander, than for the Settlement itself. If people respected her, surly trivial fights like the one she was just in wouldn't occur.
Suddenly, the mutant boy, item still clutched to his chest, poked his head around Nora's leg to look at Xander and Styles. Feeling safe, he stuck his tongue out at Styles in a taunt. It was the boy's way of getting back at his attackers without causing too much of a ruckus. His ear flicked and he turned his green eyes to Xander. Suddenly, since the first time Nora appeared, the boy spoke, "They wanted my box. I said no and they tried to steal it and pushed me." |

Xander sighed and shook his head. It angered him that a group of grown men had the audacity to harass a child. He glared at each man in turn before turning back to Nora. Softening his gaze, he nodded, indicating that the should stand at ease. He had tried before to tell her that saluting him wasn’t necessary, but it seemed to be ingrained in her mind. Dismissing the thoughts he turned back to the situation at hand.
“This is unacceptable, you all should treat Ms. Winsor the same respect you would show me. I suggest you all go home and reevaluate your choices tonight.” Alex looked down at Styles. “Except for you, I think a night of detainment would do you some good. I suggest you stay sober for awhile.”
He felt like a hypocrite for saying such a thing, but he didn’t let it weigh on his mind. Instead he turned to the small boy clutching at his officer’s leg, smiling when he taunted Styles. Alex listened intently as the boy spoke and shook his head. He called over one of the other patrolman and transferred Styles to his watch. Styles was escorted away and Xander turned to the boy, crouching down. Now at his level, Xander smiled reassuringly.
“It’s alright, they can’t hurt you now. They’re just cowards. May I ask, why did they want your box?”
It concerned Alex that Styles had so many people backing him. He’d have to have a talk with them about spreading such hate. He would not tolerate discrimination within the settlement. It was lucky Alex had gotten there. Nora could easily hold her own against the men, but they could easily have snatched the boy while she was distracted.
NOTES ; Is this good for a mobile reply?

| Nora looked pleased when Xander called for Styles to be detained. She agreed that a night locked up would force him to reflect on what he had done. After Alex dealt with the mutant boy and figuring out what caused this situation, Nora would be sure to prompt her captain into a discussion about what could be done about the growing dislike for mutants and the gifted of the settlement. Of course Nora understood the regulars unease around these creatures... Nora herself had experienced the nightmare that was a gifted gone beserk. But she was a true believer in keeping the peace for the benefit and safety of everyone. Mutants and the gifted weren't inherently evil.
The boy's little fox tail twiched when Xander bent down and addressed him. He was suddenly shy, unsure if he should show the Settlement's leader what was in there. But he lowered the box and popped open the lid, tilting it so Xander could see but still keeping it tight in his hands in case someone else tried to take it.
Nora leaned in, staring at the box. Inside of it was michellaneous items: a ring, two necklaces, a gold watch, and a cellphone. There was, of course, several small things to snack on such as candies and crackers. The commander's brows furrowed. Did the cell phone work? Maybe Styles and his men were just trying to steal from the boy to show they had power. Who knew. But she remained silent, only looking up at Xander once more and waited for him to speak.
Perhaps she would get orders on this matter.
The boy, after showing his goods, closed the box quickly. He spoke more quietly than he had before. "They said I stole this. I found these. I didn't steal. Stealing is bad. They said this was theirs. They really wanted this." Once more, the box opened so he could point at the cellphone. The boy didn't know what it was called, he just knew that he could play games on the thing. |

Alex peered into the box, noting the miscellaneous contents. A shadow fell over him as Nora leaned in and he looked up at her with a slight smile.
“I appreciate you taking your job seriously Nora. We could use more people like you here. If this was a legitimate job at a business I’d give you a raise.”
He chuckled and looked back down at the boy and reached out slowly to ruffle the boy’s hair, his smile widening. Leaning in slightly, Alex drooped his shoulders to make himself smaller and less intimidating. It was best to make yourself as non-threatening as possible when talking to children as it generally made them feel safer.
“I promise I won’t let them take your things. You found them fair and square, eh? That’s a cellphone, it’s used to talk to people far away. They might’ve thought they could get it to work, though, I’m not sure who they were intending to call.”
Xander stood and looked at Nora-Jean and nodded gratefully. He couldn’t express in words the amount of gratitude and respect he had for her. She always seemed to know just what to do and was amazing at her job. It made him feel a lot better about the safety and security of the settlement and its people.
“Could you escort him to his room? Then I’d like to speak to you in my office if you aren’t too busy.”
Turning on his heel he walked back towards his office and sat at his desk looking over reports and thinking over plans.
NOTES ; This is a pathetic excuse for a reply, I know. Especially after the length of time I've been gone. I just hope you can forgive me, I am so so so sorry.
