| Midori walked out of the schoolhouse, blinking into the sunshine before raising her hand to shiled her eyes. She looked left and then right down the streets. The other children in the settlement were pooling outside as well, skipping to their guardians and giggling loudly as they headed home. Midori puffed up her cheeks and frowned. Where was Vaughn? It was likely that he got stopped along the way by some resident, looking for his aid or opinion. Since her uncle was second in command, he was well known and often gone to for certain things.
But if there was one thing Midori knew, it was that Vaughn would be there as soon as he could be. Her uncle never left her waiting for very long. But even still, Midori wondered if she could go find him. So, she began to walk towards the street, marching her little feet on the sidewalk like a soldier. She even began to hum with every step, smiling to herself in amusement. When she got to the street, she stopped and stared at it. Carefully, Midori looked left and then right. She didn;t see any cars or other vehicles- not that there would be any. Even if the Settlement had a working car, they wouldn't be allowed to waste the gas to cruise around in the settlement. But that wasn't something Midori was aware of.
She stayed where she was, wondering if she should be wondering around. What if she left and that's when Vaughn appeared just to find Midori wasn't there anymore. That wouldn't have been fine. She gave a little sign and trudged back to the schoolhouse, kicking a rock along the way. |

It was rather clear to Vaughn that he late when a pair of survivors approached him, informing him of an argument they were having. Despite how much he insisted they should handle the quarrel on their own, they simply continued to press him for help. Their reasoning was illogical as they had stated that since he worked in law before the apocalypse he would be capable of settling their petty argument. Thus Vaughn did before heading on his way to walk Midori home from the schoolhouse with a slim chance of arriving on time, up until another person stopped him. Thankfully, this person was sensible and had a reason and did not waste too much of his glorious time. Eventually, the masked man was freed of the weight that came with responsibility and was rushing off to the schoolhouse with full knowledge of his lateness.
When Vaughn arrived at the schoolhouse, he glanced around in search of Midori, but she was not there. He felt mildly annoyed at the two people who stopped him for their insufferable verbal argument. Instantly, he approached a passerby and asked if they knew where his niece had run off to. They pointed to the sidewalk Midori went down, and Vaughn began hastily making his way down that way with his notable limp in his step. His eyes glanced around, seeing other survivors some of which waved to him and he would reply with merely a nod of acknowledgement. He had to find Midori after all! Eventually, he found her kicking a pebble and returning back towards the schoolhouse. Vaughn felt relieved and was happy to see that his niece knew to return back to the schoolhouse.
"Midori!" He began in order to get her attention while he approached. "I'm sorry for my lateness. I got held up and please do not wander off like that again. I got worried when I did not see you there," he spoke sternly. Midori wandering off in this case was not something he could take lightly; what if they had been outside the walls and not within the Aimon Settlement? However, it did not take long for Vaughn to revert to his happy self and cheerfully ask, "Now, how was your day at school?"

| Midori stopped midkick of the rock, letting it be so she could look up at her uncle with those large, innocent eyes. Vaughn came strolling up, speaking to her sternly about his worries. She felt bad for making him worry about her, and she guiltily looked down as a result. "Sorry, Uncle Vaugh..." Her voice was quiet, timid like it normally was when she was scolded. It added to her charm. But Vaughn could never stay upset for long, and his cheery voice came bursting through his mask once more.
Midori brightened up instantly, beaming with delight as she bounced on the balls of her feet. "We learned to spell more! Canada... C... A...N...A...D...A. See? I can spell it now. We also did math. I have a homework sheet on adding. Could you help me with it, uncle? Pleeeease!" Her eyelashes were batting up at him, her little bottom lip stuck out as she begged. Her tactics were to look as cute as possible so no one could ever say no to her. It always worked in her favour, especially with Uncle Vaughn.
With another skip to her step, Midori reached up and grabbed her uncle's hang with her much smaller one. She also held his hand when they were about to go somewhere. It made them both feel safe... and it allowed Midori to give Vaughn a blessing if she so chose. Uncle had warned her not to tell anyone about her powers, so Midori felt like she could only use them with him. Unfortunately, her Charm ability was not something she could turn off. It was a natural aura that creatures and survivors of all backgrounds felt and fell for. It wasn't as if Midori was trying to trick them! But she started making more allies and friends since madman struck. But Midori couldn't comprehend the full extent of what madman was. She was so, so young still.
"Uncle? Can we go to the wall? I want to see the city. Pleeeeease?" Once again, Midori was looking up at her uncle with a pleading look on her face. Would it work? |

It was of the utmost necessity to use some stern words when it came to children since they were still on the learning path of right from wrong. Lastly, allowing them to merely do as they please could sometimes land an adult in hot water. However, Vaughn figured he had been stern enough when when his niece apologized for leaving without waiting for him. He was fairly certain Midori would understand why she should not wander off, plus the masked man always found it difficult to remain mad or disappointed at his niece for even the shortest amounts of time. Thus seeing her upset face return to joy, Vaughn found himself smiling beneath the stark white mask. He listened while Midori informed him of her day and proudly relayed her accomplishments of the school day. With the smile remaining on his hidden face, Vaughn nodded to his niece's question.
"Of course I will, Midori. I would be happy to," Vaughn responded. Helping his niece was a necessary part of being a good uncle and guardian to her.
The fact that his niece also possessed an ability that made him feel obliged to help also made the masked man desire to help his darling niece. Lastly, Midori knew all the tactics to make Vaughn feel the need to help her, it was rather impressive. Naturally when Midori reached for his hand, Vaughn gently took hold of hers. It was always nice since it allowed him to know that his niece was safe, not to mention it also allowed the use of one of her abilities. The ability did keep him safe after all, which was a good thing considering Vaughn had to often times avoid the use of his own. The masked man had obtained rather noticeable abilities when used, the only exception really being his pain suppression that he used sparingly. Allowing the fellow Aimon Settlers to discover his abilities seemed like something that would bring unnecessary tension especially since he was a second-in-command which was the last thing the settlement needed.
When Midori brought up the possibility of going to the wall, Vaughn had to think for a moment. His mind preformed a quick assessment of all the reports he had heard about the protective wall that surrounded the Aimon Settlement. It seemed like a safe enough idea, not to mention Midori's charm ability made it extremely difficult for Vaughn to refuse the notion.
"Sure, I don't see why not, but you gave to make certain you listen to me. Alright?" Vaughn stated; he had to be certain Midori would listen to him so she would not get hurt after all.

| Midori smiled at Vaughn when he agreed to help her with her homework. It always went by much quicker when he was there to support her. That gave her far more time to play in the evenings. She already began to daydream about the sorts of things she was going to do when her homework was done. But first thing was first, they were going to go to the wall. Midori enjoyed walking up on the wall since it made her feel very high and safe. It also allowed her to look out across the city and see what it was like. Midori hadn't left Aimon Settlement much since arriving, and she was starting to develop a curiosity for the world outside of the protective walls of the Settlement.
Her little fingers curled tighter around Vaughn, and she began to use her blessing inducement on him. Vaughn would begin to feel a heat to the touch, nothing hot, just warm. His skin would tingle and the feeling would remind him of a sunset that was orange and pink. Midori thought of bubbles as she blessed her uncle, giving him a protective blessing that would bring him good luck and protection. The bubble, in Midori's mind eye, was encasing Vaughn in her force field. Of course, her ability was more of a luck thing than a true force field. The likliness that Vaughn would encounter danger or get injured had decreased by the time Midori was done. She was satisfied with her work and began to skip alongside her uncle, his hand still in hers.
When Vaughn urged her to listen when they got to their destination, she nodded furiously. "I will. I promise. I'll listen!" The reassurance often did wonders for her. People liked to give Midori what she wanted, and Midori was very pleased by this. As an added bonus, she enjoyed her time much more when her uncle was there. This was going to be a fun trip!
"We're going to the wall! We're going to the wall!~" The blue-haired girl began to sing happily as they walked down the dusty street of the Settlement. |

Seeing Midori happy was always an infectious emotion for Vaughn; what kind of uncle would he be if he did not enjoy his niece's happiness? Besides the point, happiness felt like a rarity within the post-apocalyptic world which meant it should be enjoyed while it last. The masked man knew all too well that the most excellent of situations could turn grave in a matter of mere moments. They were further reasoning to both of his agreements, especially since being a second-in-command of the Aimon Settlement made Vaughn rather busy a majority of the time. Thus he attempted to spend plenty of his spare time with his niece.
The masked man felt the little girl's fingers tighten around his hand and a warmth sensation come over his hand alongside a peculiar tingling. Alas, he was familiar with these feelings and knew full well of Midori's plan. It was obviously a blessing and likely one meant to assure his safety. A smile of appreciation touched Vaughn's lips, but it was unseen due to the stark white mask that covered his face and so he hoped Midori would be aware of his appreciation. He always was thankful for Midori's blessings of protection since it reassured the man in the notion of always returning to the Aimon Settlement to protect his niece. Vaughn was certain that a majority of people were aware that he did not take his duties of protecting Midori lightly. His niece was important to him and there was always the fact that he had promised Derek that he would protect her, although, he would have done so even if he did not promise. Once Midori confirmed that she would listen, Vaughn began walking towards the wall.
"I hope so, the wall can be very dangerous sometimes, Midori," Vaughn stated. "Make certain to never go there without me. I don't want you getting hurt or pestering the guards."
A chuckle came from Vaughn's mouth when Midori began happily skipping beside him, it was always pleasant to see his niece happy. To make things even better she began proclaiming her happiness in a sing-song voice as they walked down the streets of the settlement. The masked man's eyes soon looked beyond at the make-shift wall in the distance that protected the Aimon Settlement from the outside world. He was certain the wall would not crumble considering making the thing was a difficult task already and maintaining it was a tad simpler.
"Any certain part you want to go to Midori?" Vaughn asked, figuring that it was better to ask ahead of time.

| Midori did what she could to keep her beloved uncle safe. He was always talking about how dangerous the world had become and how there were no friends outside the walls of the Settlement. But he left the Settlement more than any of the residence of Aimon. That's why Midori took it as her sole task to make sure nothing happened to Vaughn outside the wall. Of course, there was only one way she could be sure of that... and that was to give him a blessing everyday. She made sure not to make it too extravagant. Just enough that if, say, a board were to fall off a building, it would just nearly miss her uncle. Or if an animal attacked a group of people they would find themselves disinterested in attacking the masked man. It was all she could do, and she viewed this task as something to be proud of.
Her daddy had never been there for her, not really. Midori had never had a female role model, and Vaughn was all she had. He was the only one she cherished deeply. If anything were to happen to him, she would be lost forever. There was a period in their lives were Midori referred to Vaughn as "Daddy", but it was shut down when her biological father overheard. He was her dad, he would say, Vaughn was uncle! She respected that enough to change how she spoke, but her biological father did not hold the "number one man" spot in her head.
"I want to go on the wall!" Midori exclaimed at the question. She wanted to be able to see over it and to the oh-so-dangerous city on the other side. There were only sliveers of time she was rewarded with such a thing. Midori was so interested in what her uncle did she would come here all the time just to see it. The places looked big and scary so of course Vaughn would warn her not to go wondering, not even to the wall where he wasn't. It wasn't as if the people of the Settlement would ever dare cross Midori, not with her uncle being second-in-command. But she had to respect what Uncle told her, so she wouldn't come to the wall without him... at least not without him knowing.
"I like to go on top so I can be big and see. Can I go on your shoulders? Then I'll be this big..." Midori stuck out her tongue in concentrationg while holding her hands apart, indicating just "how big" she would be on Vaughn's shoulders. He was a tall man so it was guaranteed she would be able to see so much better!

Blessings were something that had gotten worked into the daily routine of life considering it assisted in protecting Vaughn from the numerous dangers of the outside world. It was also a pleasant reassurance to receive a blessing from Midori and brought a sense of peace to the masked man when he went on one of his many excursions outside the confines of the Aimon Settlement. On most occasions due to Midori's gift, Vaughn found himself safe from a good portion of the dangers outside the settlement, however, these were only to mild degrees, but nonetheless it was better than nothing. Blessing him was Midori's way of helping out her uncle and Vaughn always found the blessings useful, plus any little bit of assistance was indisputably valuable. Naturally, the two of them would desire to protect each other since Vaughn was one of Midori's few parental figures, especially since Derek had been arrested. Even before the near-permanent absence of his niece's father, Vaughn had acted as a parental figure more than the mere uncle someone may see every now and again. It was apparent when Midori would refer to him as "daddy" which was something the masked man could not refuse since his brother's absence was constant, but the complaints Derek had registered afterwards had partially made him regret accepting the title. Yet, Vaughn could not deny that he had been around for Midori more than his brother and had become more suitable for the title than his brother who busied himself with work. It was rather shameful the manner of which Derek had buried himself in work, but the man had stated it was of the utmost necessity and Vaughn believed him since he lacked evidence against it. Being somebody who worked in law had granted him more of an 'innocent until proven guilty' mentality.
A gentle chuckle escaped the mask's mouth when Midori exclaimed, he always enjoyed the quiet moments like this. They were a rarity in the post-apocalypse since the center point to the minds of most was survival. "Of course we can go on top, but you best be careful and let the guards do their job." The guards needed no distractions, they did have a job to do.
The masked man kept moving, his walk still peculiar to those around him as he would expect it to be. It was easier to keep the injury going and it did make Vaughn appear as less of a threat to his fellow settlers. He could walk straight at any given time, but he often avoided doing such things to keep up the illusion of his weakness, however, when Midori asked for something it was always hard to resist. He was fairly certain most of his fellow settlers were aware of his predicament when it came to refusing his niece.
Another gentle chuckle escaped Vaughn's mask as he neared the wall and up the stairs in a leisurely manner. "Alright, but not for too long." With the power of his pain suppression he crouched down, but made it look somewhat like an effort; this was one of the moments that he appreciated his acting experience. "Come, Midori."
