When Sophia vigorously shook her head and stated that she was merely a coward, Vaughn frowned. Naturally, nobody would be able to tell considering the white mask that was permanently plastered to his face. Generally, Vaughn felt bad for the little girl since if she was a coward he probably scared her pretty badly; he also felt mildly mad at himself for scaring her.
"Either way, I do apologize. Besides, I'm certain I would be frightened if somebody suddenly broke down the door." It was attempt to make her feel better that was accompanied with a sympathetic smile that also could not be seen. When she offered him food, Vaughn merely shook his head. "No need to concern yourself with me. I work with that settlement in the west and I would not want to drain your resources, but thank-you for the offer."
From what Vaughn could tell, Sophia was a lot less afraid of him now, which was pleasant. He merely sat there and when he mentioned the blue hates he was not completely certain what to think. He had never heard of the group nor had he affiliated himself with men who wore blue hates. For a moment, Vaughn brought his hand to his chin and thought about it a few more moments, but nothing came to mind.
"I'm certainly not one of them, but I also am unaware of who they are. Can you explain, Sophia?" Vaughn began to inquire.
Being a second-in-command of the Aimon Settlement made him desire to know of the various groups in the city in case they were of use to the settlement, however, with the way Sophia had asked he could presume they were no good. Being a moralistic fellow meant that he would be unlikely to associate himself with injustice unless there was truly no choice in the matter.

Sophia nervously waited for his answer, her tension building, but when he said he wasn't aware of that group, and that he was with a settlement, her relief flooded over her, visible upon her youthful face. At first she seemed incredibly happy, then the tears welled up and a sniffle escaped.
And then the hiccups and mild sobbing started in.
"I-I w-was so s-s-scared!"
She sunk to her knees and wiped at her eyes.

The concept of men in blue hats seemed to create a tension until Vaughn answered. It was prevalent to the masked man that these blue hat wearing men were people to be feared, or at least by a little girl. Vaughn was uncertain of what they would do should they arrive and discover Sophia, but he was sure it would be terrible. He watched as the tension ebbed with his answer and how her face changed to one of relief before tears began to form. The tear welling and sniffle soon transformed into a hiccuping sob as Sophia stated she had been frightened. It broke Vaughn's heart to see children cry, even if he did not know much about the child. His face contorted in an invisible frown beneath the mask as he debated his options. Vaughn did not want to close the distance and scare her further, but seeing her crying was making him feel terrible.
Once his contemplation was completed, he rose from the chair, slowly due to his aching leg. He made his way slowly over, but kept the distance out of his arm's length. He figured that would make Sophia at least feel safe. With a grunt of effort, he kneeled down, his knee giving protests all the while. In this position, Vaughn did not pose even the slightest threat so long as he did not use his pain suppression or any of his other abilities for the matter.
"It's alright, Sophia. Do you want me to stay here a while? I'm guessing those blue hats are quite the dastards if they get you this worked up." Vaughn's voice was soft as he addressed the scared child. Although, something else returned to his mind, he was still uncertain if she was alone. "Is there anybody who will be coming to take care of you?" Vaughn asked for the second time.
The masked man knew that he needed to gather the information from Sophia. If she was alone, then Vaughn would be likely to offer her safety in the Aimon Settlement. Midori was safe behind the walls so he was fairly certain that Sophia would also be safe there.

Sophia looked at him, and when he asked about people coming to take care of her, she shook her head.
"Momma and Papa, they forgot me..."
It was barely a whisper.
"They took Brian and left me, and then the ground shook, and there was a bright light...And when i woke up, the house had this big piece of metal, i think it was a truck...a really big one, but it was so twisted and melted...it hit our house...so...so i left. I found this place, it had solar panels, and a well, and food, it was perfect. The doors were stuck, so no one would know i was here as long as i used the vent for electric heater. Then i was walking and i saw the men in the blue hats...they were grabbing people, talking about the market, and the price they would get for the people. They were slavers. I learned about Slaves and slave trade in sixth grade."
The first clue to her age, although if she told him the truth...she had gotten into sixth grade when she was nine, she was going to start high school the fall after Madman...Since she didn't have friends, and she liked to read, they had pushed her ahead in her classes. But most seventh graders were her age, so it would work out, even if she hadnt meant to reveal that much.

The mere thought of somebody forgetting their child when doomsday was arriving made Vaughn quite angry. During the days prior he had practically refused to let Midori leave his side meanwhile Sophia's parent took the presumed favored child and left. The very thought was horrendous and caused Vaughn to bite down on his lip to make certain he would not yell. In the crouched position he remained while Sophia explained her situation. It made his hidden frown deepen as he listened. She was alone and by the sounds of it she had been for months. He could only imagine how terrible it would have been for her especially at her young age; hinted at when she spoke about grade six.
"That must have been horrible. Nobody should do that to anyone, especially a child," Vaughn responded. He hesitated a moment when he thought about the blue hats returning. "Doesn't sound like it's safe here. Perhaps you would like to come to the settlement? It would likely be safer for you than out here alone."
The masked man was not certain if the girl would like to leave the safety of her home, but he definitely could not stay here forever. He was the second-in-command which meant the Aimon Settlement required his attention and behind those wall was where his niece, Midori, remained. It was his duty to protect his niece since the agreement made with Derek needed to honored. His eyes looked towards a nearby window, he would have to be returning back soon. Vaughn was not certain how the settlement would react to his current absence, but he could presume it was unlikely to be positive.
"Speaking of which, I will have to return there soon. I have work to attend to there daily and I would not want to worry my niece." Vaughn stated while he slowly rose from the crouched position to a full stand. Despite the pain, he would have to start making his way back to the Aimon Settlement, but he knew he could always use his pain suppression to hurry the pace when it was time to go.

Sophia blinked. Go with him? To a place with other people?
"I...Is...is it loud? I dont like loud..."
The yelling of her home, the crash of her mother throwing pots and pans at her father. The thuds of her father throwing furniture. The dull smacks of her parents hitting each other with enough force to break bones sometimes. The laughing of her brother as he cheered them on.
She sniffled again.
"I just want to be left alone...But i dont like being alone..."

It was a suggestion, however, Vaughn was not completely certain whether or not Sophia would take it. If she did not, then there was little the masked man could do since his commitments bound him to the Aimon Settlement and Midori was his top priority. When she asked if it was loud, Vaughn had to think for a moment. It could get loud at times, mostly because it was a decently sized group of people in a singular location. Naturally, the grimness of situation did call for moments of hush, but humans were social creatures when it boiled down to it.
"A majority of the time yes, but I would say it's usually rather calm. I won't lie, there are plenty of people there and some tend to converse rather loudly," Vaughn explained. Dishonesty would do him no good here, especially since Sophia would probably just figure it out for herself.
Naturally, Vaughn was clueless to what the young girl could have possibly gone through, but based on what the beginnings of the apocalypse were like for her, it was likely terrible. As much as he hated the concept, he could not stay and make certain her survival throughout the apocalypse, however, there was something he could do.
"Well, I may have to leave shortly. If you don't want to come along that's fine, but if you like I could come back and visit you should I get time. However, I cannot be certain how often I could drop by to check in. My job in the settlement is important and at times can consume my entire day." Vaughn explained, sparing another glance at the window. He listened to what she said about being alone, a contradicting statement. "I see. Most people don't, especially in a scary world like this," Vaughn stated.
With mutated animals, malicious survivors and a plethora of other dangers there was not much for people not to be afraid of in this post-apocalyptic world. Almost everything and anything was dangerous when placed in the right hands and he knew, based off his own thought and what Sophia said, there were people out there who would harm a child. Vaughn lingered a few more moments, he wanted an answer before he began heading back to the Aimon Settlement.

Sophia struggled, for all of five seconds, to decide if she would go with him or not.
"Let me get some things!"
she scrambled to the room she kept the salvaged goods she always found. Two working flashlights, a couple pocket knives, a backpack she had filled with clothes that fit her.
However the final item would likely cause some laughter. As she reentered the room, she was dragging a massive (in comparison to herself) sword, which at first glance might be a 'decoration' but closer inspection would reveal it to be a 'functional replica'. However it was far too heavy for her to actually carry, but she thought a weapon would be of use...

There were a few moments of silence as Vaughn awaited Sophia's answer. If she decided to remain here, then he would have to start planning on times to meet her, but her answer did not take long. He watched as she rushed off to pack, there was no need to hurry her when it came to gathering her supplies; or at least Vaughn felt that way. The last thing he wanted was for Sophia to forget something and have to take her back to this dangerous neighborhood where the blue hats lurked. Vaughn was confident he could protect her, but some sort of fight would be likely to frighten her.
Slowly, Vaughn followed with his limp, sometimes catching glimpses of Sophia scrambling to gather her things. She was surprisingly hasty at it, but the last item she grabbed was an interesting piece. Behind her she dragged a sword, far to big for herself, which appeared to be something in working order. A gentle smile was on Vaughn's face, watching the little girl drag the large sword was somewhat comical, but he managed to keep his laughter at bay.
"Do you want me to carry that Sophia? It seems a tad heavy for you," Vaughn asked.
He took a few steps closer to her and thought for a moment whether or not the sword would be a hindrance to carry. Leaving it seemed like a horrendous idea since the weapon could fall into the wrong hands not to mention the settlement could always use more weapons. He would not even doubt if someone preferred swords to guns since they were quieter.

Sophia blinked, the sword WAS heavy...but before she could answer she tripped over a loose trail of cloth (a shirt sleeve?) and stumbled into Vaughn, her open hand brushing his as she fought to keep her balance. As soon as she did however, the swung swung up, in her single handed grasp, passing very near Vaughn's head, and embedding itself into the wall.
Sophia stared at him after getting back to her feet. She knew of this power, her ability to absorb and take on the physical attributes of others she had touched, which meant Vaughn was also empowered. She wrenched the sword out of the wall, marveling at the strength she now possessed, but also knowing it wouldnt last forever, and that it was pure chance she had gotten this power, and not grown a beard.
"I think i got it..."

Patiently, Vaughn waited for an answer and found it likely that he would have to carry the heavy, metal object. However, before Sophia could give him an answer she tripped over something and stumbled into him, which was not a major problem for the masked man. A jolt of pain sparked from his old wound, but in order to remain up right he was forced to use some of his pain suppression. There was one thing that gave him quite the fright, which was the sword that swung close to his head. It embedded itself into the wall, but the brush still caused him to feel a tad scare. Perhaps he should train a little more caution when children were holding menacing weapons, especially big heavy ones.
Once Sophia returned her feet, Vaughn was about to get the sword, but when she managed to get it out of the wall he felt mildly concern. A few moments ago the girl struggled to carry the sword and now she wretched it from the wall with ease, clearly she was gifted. Vaughn knew that may be a problem, gifted always put the Aimon Settlement on edge.
He nodded when she stated that she believe she could carry the sword. "Sophia, I'm guessing your gifted. If you could, try to not use your powers. It tends to frighten the other settlers," Vaughn suggested. "Now come along, we best get a move on."
With that, he ceased the use of the pain suppression and began his hobble down the hall and towards the stairs, or which he still felt mildly annoyed by. He descended the steps slowly, making certain not to put too much strain on his sore leg. Once he reached the bottom he leaned against the nearby wall to give his sore leg a moment.
"If that sword ever feels too heavy, feel free to say something, Sophia," Vaughn said. That was when he had a thought, he should probably let her know about his niece. The thought made him smile, perhaps this was Midori's chance at a playmate. "Just do you know, I do have a niece back at the settlement. If you need someone to play with I would guess she would be up for it. She may appreciate it since I can be rather busy."

Sophia nodded and rested the sword on her shoulder.
"If i dont touch anyone, or anything, it doesnt happen...i should have put on my gloves..."
She followed him thinking about his words carefully.
"I think i'll be ok. I'm used to being alone."

Now that Sophia had used her gift, it appeared she could handle the sword with blatant ease, it was somewhat concerning. The masked man knew swords were dangerous, but after one swinging right near his head, he felt a little bit more afraid of them. Vaughn watched her with a bit of caution, but it appeared the same incident that happened prior was unlikely to be repeating itself soon, or at least he hoped that would be the case. When Sophia mentioned putting on her gloves, Vaughn nodded.
"That's a good idea. At least when we get near the settlement. Them thinking you're a regular will probably help put them at ease and be more accepting," Vaughn explained.
He gestured for Sophia to follow as he made his way towards the front door. There was still plenty of ground to cover between here and the settlement. However, there was another bother that Vaughn had not thought about until it was time to leave the cover of the house. Were the blue hats a threat now that he had Sophia with him? Either way he would keep caution, but it would be good to know what exactly he was dealing with.
Once again he nodded at her words. "I could imagine, doesn't sound like anyone has been around to help you." Vaughn paused, his eyes doing a quick survey of the area. "Sophia, should I be concerned about those blue hats? If so, do you know what I should be expecting?" Vaughn asked.
He could always keep one of the berettas drawn in order to protect them and should that fail then there were always his gifts. However, he always preferred to avoid using them in front of people nowadays; the last thing he wanted was for someone to discover that secret. If there was no other choice, then naturally he would use them, but for now Vaughn remained hushed about them.

Sophia blinked when he asked about the blue hats.
"I see them with spears, sometimes guns, but not often. They dont follow any patterns, at least not any i could see. Its been two days since they last came. they never travel groups smaller than five, or more than ten, which is actually pretty smart. Smaller groups might struggle with a mutant attack, but larger groups are more likely to be a target. they walk in the Hyperion formation, with everyone circled up facing outward, They speak English mostly, but i heard some of them speaking French and a few others Italian. I have seen two with strange powers, and one who looked like he was mixed with a dog or wolf, all furry, but he could speak. He comes with every group, and seems to be a tracker of some kind."

Intently, Vaughn listened to the description of blue hats which sounded relatively dangerous. He noted everything Sophia said considering all of it was rather important to defending himself and the little girl he was escorting to the Aimon Settlement. The best method of safety seemed to be trying their best to avoid the group should they decide to venture towards the area. Vaughn was rather talented in using his abilities despite the fact that he often avoided their usage, but a large group, guns, spears and a couple of gifted was definitely beyond his abilities. However, his super speed did make fleeing a possible option and likely the one he would take should these mysterious blue hats arrive, especially since a little pain suppression and some body modification would allow him to carry Sophia.
"I see, let's attempt to avoid those scoundrels then. They would most certainly have the advantage over us," Vaughn said. He stated what was rather obvious, but it was the masked man's way of saying 'I'm not some godly gifted'. "We best keep our eyes open. Make sure you tell me if you see anything, Sophia. Even if you think it is merely paranoia since you may be correct to be concerned."
A steady pace was set by Vaughn, or at least as steady of one the man could manage without suppressing an ounce of pain. Every so often he would glance at Sophia as he walked down the sidewalk, making certain the little girl had not lagged behind; she was technically his responsibility now. Then an idea occurred, if Sophia was going to be joining the Aimon Settlement then he might as well attempt to learn more about her.
"So what did you like to do prior to the apocalypse, Sophia?" Vaughn asked casually. He thought it would help make the walk go by faster and possibly allow them to become acquainted with one another.
While he walked, Vaughn's yellow eyes glanced at the other houses that lined the streets, each baring some definition of damage due to the fact they were no longer maintained. Chipped paint, broken windows, and even some of the houses were partially collapsed. It was clear the apocalypse alongside afterwards had made a mess of the Nootau residential area.
