SPARROW FROST
MALE | DEMISEXUAL |
TWENTY-FIVE | GIFTED MUTANT |
appearance
Sparrow is a tall man at 6'2". His body is well-built and well-defined from years of sports and boxing. His skin is naturally olive in tone, and it often tans darker with extended exposure to the sun. He rarely burns, just tans. Sparrow's naturally dark brown hair was originally dyed red and kept short and around his ears; however, due to recent events, his hair has grown out considerably. His natural hair color has reclaimed his head, and the remaining red has been outcast to his tips.
While a very handsome young man, there are a few things you should know about him. The first is his eyes: they were originally dark, chocolaty brown. They are now a brilliant gold that holds a faint glow. The second is his hands: his nails have grown and sharpened into claws. They break easily, but they grow back just as quickly. He has a tendency to accidentally scratch himself with his claws, leading to a handful of claw scars on his body along with the scars that were the product of the sports and 'doomsday'. Last but not least: a wolf tail has sprouted from his backbone, with bushy fur as brown as his hair and a paler underside. While he may try to pull the stoic bad boy act, his tail is a traitor that reveals his innermost emotions.

abilities
SHAPESHIFTING (GREY WOLF)
Overall: Sparrow has the ability to change his entire form, specifically into that of a large grey wolf. The transformation used to be extremely painful, but enough transformations has dulled the pain and quickened the transformation time.ENHANCED STRENGTH
Weaknesses: While he would like to claim control over his form, he still has a nasty habit of changing forms based on his emotions. Extreme anger seems to trigger it the most, and it often throws him into a blind rage that shuts out his humanity and allows feral instinct to take over.
He cannot communicate in this form unless the other person understands animals or grew up with dogs to understand the body language.
Overall: Regardless of form, Sparrow possesses an unnatural strength. Punches, kicks, and bites can do serious damage even when he is holding back. He can easily lift up to 250kg (~551lbs) and carry it for long distances before growing tired.ENHANCED SENSES
Weaknesses: He often forgets his own strength and breaks or tears things easily.
If he exerts too much of his strength, he will tire and be forced to rest or risk passing out.
Overall: While he would like to claim all of his senses are heightened, only his senses of sight, hearing, and smell have heightened past that of the average human or wolf. His sense of touch and taste is the exact same as it always has been.
Limits:
- Hearing: can hear a sound up to fifteen miles away. sometimes has trouble with exact conversations with the greater distance, but can still pick out the tone and the owner of the voice (assuming he's heard them before). hindered if there is too much noise to sort through. can also hear higher frequencies than normal humans, more akin to that of a wolf's hearing.
- Sight: can detect even the smallest movements and details. cannot accurately see small details past 150 meters. hindered to 75 meters in crowded areas of people, undergrowth, etc.
- Smell: can easily distinguish smells and lock onto a specific smell to track it until the scent trail ends. hindered by rainy days.
background
A non-native to Nootau, Sparrow was born and raised in a small farming town in Ohio. The eldest of three boys, Sparrow was quickly dubbed the "man of the house" and had a lot of responsibility placed on his shoulders at a young age. Both of his parents were doctors--his mother of the animal variety while his father of the human variety--so they were never home as much as they needed to be. His mother remained close by since there was plenty of work to be found with farm animals, but his father worked at a large hospital in the nearest city. Commuting and long hours often had him staying over at the houses of colleagues if he had to be there early and stay late.
Not being one to disappoint or burden his parents, Sparrow did what he could to ease his mother's workload. He started to fill the role of both mother and father when the pair were not around or dead asleep. He cooked, cleaned, and looked after his little brothers. Stress was weighing down on him, and his mother only took notice one day when she received a call from one of his middle school teachers to notify her of his dropping grades. She managed to finish work early that night so she could get the younger boys into bed and then sit down to talk with Sparrow. The conversation only lasted for ten minutes, though it was more one-sided with Sparrow only nodding in agreement to everything said. He was to take a step back and enjoy his youth... And remember to do his homework.
Easier said than done.
Reluctantly, he first got his grades back up to where he was at least passing. Then his mother urged him to join some sort of sport at school so he could make friends his own age. It was his youngest brother who suggested he do football, and he went to tryouts as soon as they were held. He got in, and he was once more reminded to keep his grades up or else he wouldn't be able to participate in the games. The group of so-called friends who gathered around him, made up of the majority of the football team and the cheerleaders, were definitely not the kind of people he wanted to associate himself with. They were rude and vulgar, and most lacked any respect for their parents. Yet, not wanting to go back on his promise, he bottled up his dislike and allowed himself to be melded into their perfect 'friend'.
Around freshman year of high school, he picked up boxing to build of strength after his coach recommended it. He was advised to stick to the punching bag before a big game as they did not want him useless on the field. It was around this time that his father began to return home less and less. The times he was home, he would argue with his mother. Tensions were high, and Sparrow began staying longer and longer at school. His brothers would often sit on the sidelines of the football field while waiting for his practice to end, not wanting to deal with the tension in the house when their father came home. Once more, his grades started to drop, teetering on the line of passing and failing.
Sophomore year, his parents split up. By some stroke of misfortune, the parents were given joint custody of only Sparrow (something he never quite understood), and Sparrow was told that he was to live with his father in the city and only get to visit his mother on the weekends. Infuriated, his 'friends' from the football team easily got him to agree to one last outing. "Teenage rebellion," they had told him. "Live a little before you leave." That outing was a party that resulted in an abandoned barn being burned down and his first encounter with alcohol. He ended up passed out in the middle of a field, apparently dumped after he managed to refuse the advances of multiple cheerleaders and threw up on one of them, according to the one person on the team with the decency to fill him in when he had asked. Quite the party.
The move in with his father wasn't all that bad, if he had to admit to anything. The man kept out of his way for the most part, letting him set up his room how he pleased. Of course, his father was working for most of the move, so it was no wonder why he was left to his own devices. The worst part was having to get used to the city and a new, much larger high school. Had he not instantly tried out for the football team and earned his place in the school's social hierarchy simply because of his skill and physique, he might have ended up as something close to a social outcast simply because he was way too nervous to try and talk to people. The downside, however, is that the city football team seemed to be far worse in quality of people than his hometown. The team itself was great, keeping on a winning streak for the past few years, but the people made him wonder if the school just didn't care who was on the team as long as they won. Some were getting kids to do their homework, others were obviously failing without their teachers saying a thing, and they really enjoyed blowing their parents' money.
He bit his tongue and kept his judgements to himself.
Weekends spent in his hometown, when he did not have to rain check for football practice and games, were a blessing. He missed his brothers, and they were always excited to see him. The days were spent roughhousing outside, Sparrow's poor attempts at helping his brothers with his homework, and, overall, returning to his original schedule of easing the workload off his mother's shoulders. He just wished he could have stayed, reminded that he had to return to the city each Sunday night.
As time passed, his father only appeared long enough when it came time to start thinking about college. His father pushed for him to go into medical school, but considering grades had never truly been high on his priorities, Sparrow knew he would never be able to make it in medical school. He went to his mother for advice on college and degrees, but she only told him to choose what he wanted to do. They would find a way to pay his tuition. Thinking long and hard, he also went to his guidance counselor and asked his teachers for advice. Most advised him to try for a school where he could get a football scholarship. While ideal to keep the cost from adding up, he didn't know if football was what he wanted to do in life. It had become more of a necessity than anything else, and he honestly only stuck with it for the easy 'friendship' of the team.
During his senior year of high school, he chose to focus more on his grades, bringing them up as high as he could. He applied to several different colleges, nearby and out of state for various different degrees that seemed even the slightest bit appealing. In the end, however, it was a football scholarship that ultimately allowed him to get into a nearby college. It was no ideal, but it would have to do. Graduation came and went, and Sparrow moved out of his father's place and into the dorms of his university. Thus began the next four years that slowly passed him by, yet the four years of college would never be completed. He was kept busy until the end of the second year, floating by on his grades while his coach kept his attention focused primarily on the game. He was kept so busy that he almost missed a letter that came from his mother, filled with her optimism. Then his brothers ended up on campus, interrupting practice. His coach was furious, but Sparrow ignored him in favor of his brothers. The youngest was sobbing, and the other was struggling to keep his composure.
Their mother was in the hospital.
She was rushed to the small farm town clinic and then to the city hospital after collapsing during a routine checkup at a farm. He cut practice, leaving with his brothers for the city. They remained at the hospital for as long as their father would allow them, crashing at his place for the night and returning to the hospital as soon as morning came to check up on their mother. Her condition was stable for now. Getting the all clear from his university, he took time off to return home and care for his brothers. They were both in high school now, so there was not nearly as much as he had to do. They had even tried reassuring him that they would be fine without him, but he refused to leave. He tended to the small garden and the chickens they kept, and he busied himself with keeping their old house from falling into ruins, making small fixes here and there. A leaky roof, a squeaky door, a mouse problem--he always found something to keep him preoccupied.
Then came the news that their mother's condition was worsening. Their father paid for one last trip to the city to they could say their goodbyes. He was distraught, uncertain how he should handle the situation. He was torn between wanting to keep up a strong front for his brothers and wanting to break down in tears. He ended up doing the former until his mother apologized to him. Only then did he lose all resolve.
Sparrow quit college and took up a job in town so he could remain with his brothers. They should have gone to their father, but the man said it would be better for all of them if they remained in their hometown. His father was going to continue paying the bills, but Sparrow was determined to earn up enough that they would no longer have to rely on him. His brothers also wanted to take up part-time jobs, but he refused to let the youngest take a job until he was in his junior year. When the middle child graduated high school, he did not go off to college like Sparrow had hoped he would. Instead, he got a full-time job to pick up the slack. They both urged their little brother to go to college when he graduated, but he had absolutely no interest, wanting to help out just like his brothers. His view only changed because he had met a charming girl who convinced him to apply for the same college she was. They both got in, and the little brother even gathered a handful of scholarships to at least let him coast his way through the first two years.
It was around this time that their father once more inserted himself into their lives. He brought with him a new car, a wad of cash, and determination. He wanted the two boys who remained to go on a road trip. Get out, see more than just their little farm town. Sparrow only agreed because his brother seemed eager, and his father said he wouldn't be tagging along. Making arrangements with work that ultimately meant quitting their jobs because they didn't know how long they would be away, Sparrow and his brother packed up and drove out. They visited a couple of neighboring states before crossing the border into Canada. They spent far too long in Canada, it would seem, as their stop overnight at a hotel was cut short by a blaring alarm. They went down to talk to management about the alarm, only to be rushed into the hotel basement by staff. A lot of people were crammed into the basement, workers and guests alike. Children were crying, people were mumbling their prayers, and then everything went black.
When he came to, there was rubble everywhere with bodies buried underneath. As he slowly gathered his senses, he realized that his brother was missing from his side. Stumbling to stand, he dug through the rubble in an attempt to find him, only to stop multiple times because the sight and stench of the dead proved to be too much for him. Unable to find him, he searched for a way out, finding the stairs mostly in tact while the floor above had caved in. He managed to climb out, only to find the world had changed drastically. It was only when he had found a seemingly save space that he gathered his bearings and finally checked himself over, finding a few particularly nasty looking gashes and bruises, but it didn't look like he had any broken bones. Just sore muscles.
With finding his brother at the front of his mind, he stumbled around the broken building, digging through rubble and calling his brother's name. Nothing. He did manage to found someone clinging to life on the second floor, and it was them who pointed out that his eyes were "scary" and "glowing." Despite his efforts to keep the stranger alive, he was unable to stop them from passing out due to severe blood loss.
Time dragged on and his desire to find his brother faded into the desire to survive. With time came more changes, such as sharp claws that formed on his hands or the pain in his backside that eventually turned into a tail. There was a point when he tried covering them up, highly embarrassed at his current appearance, but he soon dropped it when one bad run in with a group of survivors ended with him sending another man skidding across the ground with a single punch and the adrenaline changing his form through a painful process that stunned his assailants just long enough for him to turn tail and run.
He has tried to avoid people ever since, trying to survive on his own.
miscellaneous
► Dabbled in the guitar and singing when he was younger. Often used it to lull his brothers to sleep when they were younger. Stopped in middle school.
► Knows a little more than basic first aid thanks to his parents. He tried reading their medical textbooks before, but he ended up just looking at the pictures.
► Due to his claws and strength, he prefers hand-to-hand or hand-to-teeth combat. This can easily put him in danger since he gets so up close and personal with whatever he is fighting.
► He hasn't entirely given up on finding his brother, but he's almost afraid to because he believes he will be blamed for all of this. Had he not accepted the road trip, they might have been safely at home still.
