VYLAD DAMIAN ZAIDER
MALE | BISEXUAL |
EIGHTEEN | G. MUTANT |
appearance
When it comes to build, Vylad is around 5’6” making him a little shorter than average height. Vylad is rather thin and lacks muscle, which makes him rather light. Originally, Vylad had darker skin, but the Maras caused him to obtain a greyish complexion. A few other features created by Maras are Vylad’s peculiar yellow eyes alongside the 9 four-point stars that are on his forehead. These stars are usually hidden by his raven coloured hair. Vylad’s hair is a little on the longer side for most guys which sometimes causes it to fall into his eyes. The back length of his hair goes down to the bottom of his neck. A majority of the time, Vylad dresses in a punkish style which often includes wife-beaters and fur-lined jacket on most days, however, when one is in the apocalypse you tend to just go with whatever will be useful. Despite the apocalypse going on around him, Vylad still wears thick, black makeup around his eyes.

abilities
Luck Inducement --- Offensive/Defensive/Passive --- Decent Control
Vylad is capable of inducing the possibility of lucky things happening to himself or others. Although this doesn’t mean that he or other people can remain in Lady Luck’s favour forever. The most this power does is tilte the probability of something happening slightly to the favourable outcome. Depending on the circumstances, the level of which Vylad can induce the favoured outcome changes. Something trivial like gambling games are simpler than altering his luck of surviving a usually fatal attack, thus he still finds himself at Lady Luck’s mercy. Lastly, depending on how much luck he wants to add can dictate how much energy goes into the ability. Overloading the ability can cause days of inactivity for his luck inducement since it seems that even gifts need a break. People who posses luck eraser can cancel out his ability entirely. Other luck based abilities can also cancel out his inducement, making it a real nuisance. Another flaw to Vylad’s ability is that he has to will himself or others luck prior to the event occurring, otherwise it simply won’t work. The biggest use of this ability is that Vylad can create lucky charms, but this usually lowers his own luck for weeks until the ability refreshes.
Pyrokinesis --- Offensive/Defensive --- Decent Control
Now this is one of the most concerning abilities that Vylad possesses since controlling fire in itself is destructive. Vylad can control a variety of flames and increase their heat immensely under most conditions. This also makes him immune to being burned and to the effects of being in extremely warm temperatures. He usually can’t handle cold temperatures as well as the average person and can get colder a bit than average people. One of Vylad’s biggest weaknesses is water when it comes to his pyrokinesis at least (plus it makes his makeup run!). In order to create fire, it often spawns from his hands and in a small radius around him, but he can’t be wet if he wants to create fire. Being soaked can usually cause him to even have difficulties manipulating the fire around him, mostly even it comes to expanding it. Another major flaw to his pyrokinesis is that it can tend to flare up when he get’s mad. At first it makes his hands warmer than usual, but if the anger continues it can grow into actual flames.
Mind Block --- Passive --- Natural
Vylad can’t be affected, for the most part, by most mentally based attacks, mostly those that are associated with his own mind. This means powers like mind reading, telepathy, mind control, basically powers that control his will don’t affect him. Not even abilities like siren song can work on Vylad, but this power has its limits. First off, remember how I said “for the most part”, well that’s just it, this gift works better the further the mind assailant is and is dependant on said person’s control/power. The more powerful the person is, the better chance they have at unlocking the secrets of his mind. If the person isn’t mentally trying, chances are he won’t notice. When people try to speak to his via telepathy, all Vylad gets is a strange static noise in his head. During the time that somebody is trying to infiltrate his mind, Vylad can fall victim to mild to severe headaches which are once again dependent on the person’s power level. There is also the fact that this ability does not block all psychic based attacks, which means people can still use telekinesis or psybeams can by all means still work.
background
Originally, Vylad was born in Red Deer, Alberta on March 5th to his single mother. Vylad’s family was a mere trio consisting of himself, older brother and of course his mother. They were relatively poor and his mother had to work extremely hard to keep the family afloat by taking on numerous jobs. Despite the father of the children being a complete deadbeat, Vylad’s mother never filed for child support even after he walked out on them after finding out about his mother’s second pregnancy. She always held onto the faint hope that he would return and bring in some cash for the barely passing by family. Of course, there was a zero percent chance that the guy would be returning anytime soon, thus Vylad’s childhood was absolutely fatherless. For Vylad it was strange going out and seeing children with their fathers or both parents and it consistently piqued his curiosity to where his was, however, he didn't bother to ask.
As years went on, Vylad found that both his mother and brother had complete confidence that his father would return. He was merely 8 when he began asking them about him. If this man would be returning some prior information would be pleasant! They seemed to model him and only spoke good of his father and Vylad believed every word. Eventually, he asked the grandparents on his mother's side about him. Despite Vylad being a child, they cut the sugarcoated truths and told him straight up that his father was terrible. He was a deadbeat who consistently ridiculed his mother and had absolutely no respect for a single soul. He would go out late into the night and come back in the morning smelling like smoke and booze. They also said he was irresponsible and left because he couldn't handle the idea of children. Vylad couldn't believe that somebody had such terrible things to say, but he found himself believing his grandparents more and more. What kind of father would be gone for 8 years without being taken by somebody or at least getting into contact with their family? The answer would hopefully be none, thus Vylad found himself hating the man that he'd heard many stories of. Everything his grandparents said made more sense then the jabber his mother and brother made.
About a year later was when Vylad had enough of the nonsensical stories his mother and brother would spill out. Well they were droning on about how fantastic this mystery man was, Vylad simply snapped and told them a couple of the facts he had heard. They were pretty mad over what he said and sent him to bed early. For a while afterwards they tried to coax him into believing his father was an excellent man, but their attempts failed. Eventually the topic of his father faded until it was seemingly forgotten. Vylad was never sure if they figured out who exactly told him the truth, but at the time that didn’t seem to matter.
It was when Vylad became 12 that he started concerning himself with his family’s money issues and had gone to his beloved grandfather for assistance since he was constantly told not to worry about it by his mother. Unfortunately, his grandfather gave the worst suggestion and began getting Vylad to help out in his various criminal activities. Morals were no longer cared for since the young boy thought that earning something would help his family get by. Drug dealing, battery, conning, you name it and chances were that Vylad would have done it at some point or another (whether it was now or in the future). During this age, he was usually accompanied by an older worker. After awhile he began taking a liking to the criminal world and would at times leave school early to help his grandfather. However, this only brewed a new pot of troubles. First, he began getting yelled at for skipping school and getting the odd failing test, yet, he shrugged it off. During school hours, his brother began keeping a vigilant lookout and informed the school staff that he wasn’t to leave without him or his mother. Thus he became a little sneakier and managed to slip by the eagle eyes of the staff and his own brother to keep working. That seemed to only increase the yelling, but Vylad continued to shrug it off until his grandfather insisted that it was best to keep his grades up.
Eventually the crimes Vylad committed began to spark guilt in the youth to the point where he stayed up for hours due to it or for his job. His consistent tiredness became very noticeable since a majority of the time he would start yawning or showing other telltale signs of tiredness. It got so bad that his mother decided it would be best to take him to a doctor. After a while of tests it was declared that Vylad had insomnia, however, due to the teen’s constant and well-mended lies the reason was placed on not having enough sleep drive alongside long nights spent awake working on school work. Soon enough people at his school began noticing his tired-looking exterior and would bombard him with questions. His solution became wearing black makeup around his eyes.
It was not long after the youth’s diagnoses that he began gambling a small portion of his earnings on card games. The pastime meant a lot to Vylad and eventually he learned how to cheat his way to victory. The entire group cheated every now and again, which made the real game trying not to get caught. Unfortunately, two years of Vylad’s constant absences during the evenings were becoming noticed by his brother to the point where his brother would eavesdrop on him. A couple of late night phone calls to the boss, some sneaking out and strange long shifts at work soon added up to his brother figuring it out. One day when he returned home from his job, his brother confronted him when their mother was working. They yelled a lot and it ended when Vylad retreated to his room and slammed the door shut. Over the next few months similar arguments would occur with their mother unbeknownst to what was happening. All she saw was her boys growing apart and would attempt to remedy the situation.
After all the bickering, somehow Vylad’s brother managed to convince their mother to start a new life in another city. Their mother eventually broke down and agree without having any clue that this was his brother’s plan to cease Vylad’s criminal activity. The move was harsh on the adolescent since all his methods of earning money were believed to be eliminated. They moved to Nootau, British Columbia where Vylad’s uncle lived. His grandfather had long recruited his uncle, which meant that his criminal living style would still continue and the change wasn’t too severe. However, that wasn’t quite the biggest event in the moving expedition that was overly interesting to Vylad. What really piqued his interest was a girl in his class called Macy Connors, who he began extremely crushing on, however, being the ignorant jerk he can be, Vylad thought that bullying her would be the best way to get her attention. That was a big mistake, but he didn’t stop for a good while. The youth had not learned how exactly to deal with girls, thus he failed miserably at it.
The next 4 years went on with the usual events, his brother still yelled at him, he did his criminal job, made a couple of friends and so on until late October. His uncle ended up in the hospital, which was a serious problem. The small gang of criminals were forced to change up the commanders for the time being which ultimately ended with less activity all around. Business was slow which left plenty of time for school work and card games since the only tasks they did accomplish were menial. This also left plenty of time to “listen” to his brother’s nagging and how going to jail wouldn’t be a good thing. Obviously, Vylad did not care much for what his brother had to say. When political tensions began growing high his family would often try to keep him in the confines of the house, but Vylad never listened. There were things to do and places to be!
On one November night he was about to leave to play cards with a couple of friends when his brother tried to stop him. They had one of their infamous verbal arguments before a disgruntled Vylad returned to his room; opting to sneak out his window instead of the front door. After a few pleasant rounds and delightful chatter the alarm sounded and the group gave an expected panic before they went to leave. Unfortunately, a majority of the group had a hatred for Vylad’s uncle and decided that an excellent punishment would be to leave his nephew behind. They knocked him and locked him in a metal storage closet. When Vylad finally regained consciousness he was horrified to find out about his poor excuse for a prison cell. For hours he banged on the door in hopes it was merely a joke, but nobody answered his pleas for release. The concept got more terrifying when the world sudden shook. At that point, he decided to sink down and accept his defeat despite the swelling terror. He was stuck and the bombs had already gone off, which meant there was unlikely to be any solace.
Many insufferable hours were spent within the confines of the storage closet, most of which were spent wondering when he would go crazy from the Maras. Around the third or fourth hour was when he began getting furious over being stuck in the accursed storage closet for so long. That rage soon transformed into literal flames, which scared Vylad even more than being locked in the closet waiting for his doom. When the fire didn’t burn him, he was completely flabbergasted and was certain that perhaps he was going crazy. It took a few moments for the idea of pyrokinesis to sink in, since like most people Vylad didn’t expect to gain a supernatural power. Eventually, he burn a hole through the door and fled from the make-shift prison cell. For a moment, Vylad thought about finding his brother and mom, but then there was a second thought. The fighting could cause the flames to spark up, thus he didn’t bother. From that moment on, Vylad worked on his own to survive the post-apocalyptic city.
